Two teenagers who attacked and seriously injured Rugby Union great Toutai Kefu and his family in Brisbane three years ago have been sentenced. The boys could have been given up to life in jail but were instead handed 7- and 8-year jail terms over the violent break in and no conviction recorded.

00:00Resembling a war zone, that is how the bloody scene left inside the Kefu's
00:06Coorparoo home was described by a Supreme Court judge. The family was
00:11viciously attacked in August 2021. Totai Kefu, his wife Rachel and their two
00:17adult children were stabbed and slashed with a knife and a sickle. The couple
00:21suffered life-threatening injuries. Outside neighbor Ben Cannon rushed to
00:26help but he too was attacked. The teens responsible were both 15 and pleaded
00:31guilty to downgraded charges earlier this year. Last month prosecutors argued
00:36the offenses were particularly heinous, a legal categorization which means they
00:41could be sentenced to more than 10 years in jail. But their lawyers submitted they
00:45only used violence in a reactive way out of fear of who they were trying to steal
00:51from. Today Justice Peter Davis told the court the Kefu's had a right to
00:55defend themselves. Mr. and Mrs. Kefu have done absolutely nothing wrong. They
01:00were peacefully occupying their house. You entered the sanctity of that
01:04dwelling with weapons and with an intent to use them. Justice Davis determined
01:09that some of their offending was particularly heinous but when the
01:13particulars were weighed against their personal circumstances he found it did
01:17not warrant a sentence of more than a decade. Both teens only have to serve 50%
01:23of their sentences. One will be released early next year. Neither had a conviction
01:28recorded.
