From tomorrow, Tasmanians can travel on public transport for free in a move to help with rising fuel costs and ease pressure on fuel supplies. The state government says it'll cost the budget bottomline around 850-thousand dollars a month, and will end in July.

00:05Buses across the state, including between Hobart and Launceston,
00:09and ferries will be free from tomorrow until July 1.
00:13Not only of course will this measure be able to save fuel,
00:18but also encourage people in doing so onto public transport,
00:24but also most importantly support household budgets as well.

00:42Last week there was a 20% increase in Tasmanians using public transport,
00:48prompting questions as to whether the current bus service can cope.
00:52Obviously transport being free is a major thing for so many people
00:56and such a good tool to those who can access it,
00:59but there still are a lot of accessibility needs once we go past,
01:02say, the 10-minute radius of the city.
01:04Service reliability has been a huge issue under this government.
01:07That will probably continue despite it becoming free,
01:10which is an issue for people trying to get to work on time.
01:14Obviously there'll be increased demand,
01:16so the government will need to think very carefully about that.
01:18If there are new services that look as though they could be put on,
01:24of course we would look at that.
