00:07with alcohol abuse change their behaviour.
00:10He's seen first hand the impact of high rates of alcohol related harm in the remote town.
00:16Given the community of Derby and the amount of violence that we're seeing here in terms
00:22of family domestic violence, I think the impact here will be pretty much significant.
00:28The State's Director of Liquor Licensing announced further restrictions on the sale
00:32of takeaway alcohol for Broome and Derby.
00:35From mid-July, Derby bottle shops will be banned from selling alcohol on Sunday and
00:39Mondays with trading hours and daily purchase limits also capped in Broome.
00:44While Kimberley Health and local government organisations don't oppose the bans, they
00:49claim the restrictions will only work if better alcohol services such as detox and rehabilitation
00:54centres are in place.
00:56We're telling people with alcoholism problems that we're going to keep cutting back your
01:03access to that alcohol but at the same time we're going to do absolutely nothing, government
01:09is going to do absolutely nothing to provide you with the means to get off the alcohol.
01:15The Police Commissioner says the bans will help give officers respite and more time to
01:19focus on supporting the community in other ways.
01:22We can do more community policing and engagement with the community because we're not going
01:26from alcohol-related job to alcohol-related job.
01:28But not everyone is on board.
01:30Broome's Rehabilitation Centre says enforcing the restrictions could be problematic.
01:35In a statement, the Director of Liquor Licensing said her department will continue to monitor
01:39the restrictions on an ongoing basis.
01:42When asked if further alcohol bans are likely to be implemented elsewhere, she said there
01:46are no other liquor restrictions inquiries currently underway.
01:51Service and community leaders say it will take some time to determine if the new restrictions
01:55will reduce the alcohol-related harm devastating their towns.
