00:32 Giro Next Gen started with an 8.8 kilometer time trial

00:47 Starting affairs then, Tommaso Dati, the first of 174 riders

00:55 including the Italian national team and Tudor Pro Cycling,

00:59 who were represented by Matisse Rondel,

01:01 the 20-year-old winner of the All-On Nations Grand Prix

01:05 this year in 2024.

01:07 Off and setting a good time, Jakob Söderqvist then,

01:11 the Swedish former under-23 national time trial champion,

01:15 getting his time trial underway.

01:17 But at the finish line, Rondel went faster than Dati

01:20 by 20 seconds to take the hot seat.

01:22 But not for long.

01:23 Bob Donaldson from Trinity Racing, the British racer,

01:27 just about edging out Rondel from the hot seat.

01:30 In the meantime, Söderqvist was flying up the course

01:33 and taking his minute man, Neil Agüero.

01:37 Heading towards the final 500 metres then,

01:39 Söderqvist with time in hand to dislodge Bob Donaldson.

01:44 Seventh place at the World Championship

01:46 under-23 time trial, and Söderqvist, a class ride.

01:49 Better than Donaldson by 28 seconds.

01:52 Paul Magnier of Sudal Quick-Step was 10 seconds slower.

02:57 And then it was the turn of Gahl Gliva of UAE Team Emirates

03:05 Pushing for the line, though, already 30 seconds

03:08 down on Söderqvist's time, which was looking very strong.

03:11 Andrea Raccagni from Sudal Quickstep,

03:14 though very close to dislodging Söderqvist.

03:16 Six seconds slower the Italian than the Swede

03:19 at the finish line.

03:21 Then it was the turn of Kilian Faschuren

03:24 before Söderqvist knew that he had the race won.

03:28 A class performance from the former Swedish

03:30 under-23 national time trial champion.

03:33 Strong ride, indeed, the winner of stage one.

03:37 Taking the plaudits ahead of Andrea Raccagni,

03:39 the man from Genoa, just six seconds slower.

03:42 And a first Maglia Rosa for Söderqvist

03:44 in this Giro Next Gen.

03:46 He leads the race also by six seconds to Raccagni

03:51 And with that victory comes the points jersey as well.
