00:00The 119th edition of Il Lombardia 241 kilometers in northern Italy from the
00:12banks of Lake Como to a finish in Bergamo. Seldom has one rider been so
00:18much a favorite going into the race than Tadej Pogacar looking to win a fifth
00:23successive Lombardia and make history. His teammate Rafa Maike would be racing
00:28for the last time in his long and prestigious career and they rolled out
00:32of Como in warm sunshine with barely a breath of wind. Perfect conditions for
00:36the race. Before the flag dropped then Quinn Simmons was at the front and as soon
00:40as the race started in earnest the American national champion attacked
00:45bringing with him a group that after 20 minutes or so of racing had established a
00:50lead, 14 riders in total including Filippo Ganna and two of his Ineos
00:55Grenadier's teammates as well as Michael Matthews and Bart Lemon in the yellow of
00:59Visma Lisa bike. Louis Fafaka of Sudar Quickstap also in their numbers. Then
01:05Sepp Kuss with a moments in attention hit the deck hard at an innocuous part of the
01:11race and Tadej Pogacar moved up towards the front to keep himself in a safe
01:17position. Over the top of the first significant climb of the day the famous
01:22Madonna del Gisalo climb and on the descent there was trouble for Tom Pidcock who was
01:26unseated. His ratchet then working loose and he needed to effect a mobile shoe
01:33change which he did with efficiency and got back into the peloton which on the
01:37banks of Lake Como briefly split not for the first time and then came back
01:41together again as they headed to the next climb of the day the Roncola Alta.
01:45Over the top of that climb the breakaway still had two minutes and 26 but no more
01:50than that with 137 kilometers still to go. UE-E team Emirates as well as Red Bull
01:55home Borough Hansgrohe controlling the pace. Again the peloton split this time
01:59Matthias Skelmoser, Tom Pidcock, Nielsen Paulus, Timon Ahrensman and Julio Pellizzari
02:04all caught out but again it came back together again. The next climb the
02:09Berbeno climb. The breakaway had an advantage of only 1 minute and 43 seconds
02:14and on the descent off that climb Quinn Simmons for the first time opened up a
02:19little bit of an attack but it was Filippo Gana who closed the gap to the
02:23American and snuffed out that initial attack. On the approach to the next climb
02:28then Jai Hindley hitting the deck very hard and having to battle all on his own
02:32leading from the sides to get back into the peloton and on the climb of the
02:38Crocetta it was Quinn Simmons who attacked again and this time went clear
02:42of the remains of the breakaway leaving behind him a group containing Pello
02:45Bilbao, Filippo Gana, Louis Fafake and UE-E team Emirates at the back controlling
02:52the pace with 70 kilometres to go.
02:57Quinn Simmons then over the top of the Zambla Alta climb with just the Paso di
03:02Ganda remaining still had an advantage of over 3 minutes to the peloton and had
03:08destroyed the rest of the breakaway. The American on a marauding ride and within
03:13one hour of pulling off a stunning victory making the rest of the riders work
03:16very hard indeed. Then Rafa Maike took things up on the Ganda climb doing the
03:22last job with Tadej Pogacar in his long career and when he signed off he got a
03:25salute from Pogacar as Jay Vine took up the pace setting for UE-E team Emirates.
03:30Remco Evenepoel one of the riders going clear with Michael Stohr and Paul Sexas
03:34as well as Isaac del Toro. Then with 36.6k to go Tadej Pogacar launched the
03:40expected move and nobody tried to go with him least of all Remco Evenepoel who
03:45found three riders on his wheel. At the front of the race then Quinn
03:49Simmons probably knew that the inevitable was coming up towards him as Tadej Pogacar
03:53made his way to the front of the race. Further back a group containing Richard
03:59Canapaz, Primoz Roglic, Adam Yates and Oscar Onley laboured and lost contact with
04:03the front as Tadej Pogacar reached Quinn Simmons. Simmons able to hold his wheel
04:09briefly before he dropped away and Tadej Pogacar had the road all to himself as he
04:14went over the top of the Paso di Ganda with a healthy lead over the opposition.
04:17Isaac del Toro was then dropped by Michael Stohr and Remco Evenepoel and Evenepoel tried
04:23to get rid of Stohr and Quinn Simmons who'd been caught by Evenepoel and the
04:27Australian. Those three riders though going over the top of that climb
04:31together. Richard Carapaz on the descent hitting the sidewall of the descent hard.
04:36As the race then unwound the riders in bits and pieces on the long descent and Michael
04:43Stohr are battling hard just to remain in contention following the wheel of Remco
04:46Evenepoel who'd moved into second place on the road. Isaac del Toro likewise was
04:51looking at Quinn Simmons to try and get across and battle out the minor placings.
04:56Then on the long flat straight approach to the final climb in Bergamo Tadej Pogacar was
05:03assured of victory with an advantage over Remco Evenepoel of over one minute and
05:0820 seconds and Michael Stohr had it all to do to stay on terms with Remco Evenepoel
05:13as he lost contact with the rider in second place. In the meantime though with
05:17five kilometres to go Tadej Pogacar had still one minute and 30 seconds in the
05:21bank and Remco Evenepoel almost a minute over Michael Stohr as the top three
05:26placings on the road solidified and they're headed towards the finish line. In the
05:31final kilometre then Remco Evenepoel in second place Tadej Pogacar once again
05:36beating him and celebrating another history making and 20th seasonal win. A
05:42third monument something only Eddie Merckx had done in one season and a fifth
05:47consecutive Lombardia not even Fausto Coppi who won this race five times
05:52managed that feat. To win as the world champion again for the second successive year
05:57every time this man pins a number on he makes history. Tadej Pogacar then once
06:02again the better of Remco Evenepoel a brilliant ride from Stohr in third
06:07and Quinn Simmons finishing in a fantastic fourth place. No doubt about the
06:11winner though once again it was the unstoppable force that is the double
06:15world champion Tadej Pogacar.
