The education ministry has been urged to respond to parents' complaints on social media that
00:06
the passing grade for the academic session's final examinations has been lowered to 20%.
00:12
National Union of the Teaching Professions Secretary-General Fauzi Singhan said the union
00:16
will raise the matter with the ministry and urged the ministry to clarify the rationale
00:20
behind this decision to parents.
00:23
Fauzi was responding to a post on Facebook by former teacher Fadli Saleh who said the
00:27
passing grade was lowered from 40% to 20% prompting mixed reactions from parents, some
00:33
of whom questioned why the passing grade was lowered.
00:37
The final school-based examinations, which replaced centralized national exams like UPSR
00:42
and PT3, are conducted for students in years 4-6 and Forms 1-3.
00:48
Fadli shared a grading scale poster, which included new thresholds such as 20% to 34%
00:54
as passing and 35% as satisfactory.
00:58
Last month, Education Minister Fadlina Siddiq said the government will not reverse its decision
01:03
to abolish the UPSR and PT3.
01:06
She said the move was part of the ministry's broader shift toward reducing student stress
01:10
and aligning with international standards by focusing on continuous assessments that
01:14
include personal and social development.
