00:00 In the wake of Arielle Bombara revealing she'd tried to warn police about her father, both
00:07 the Commissioner and the Department of Communities say their protocols were followed, but that
00:12 didn't prevent him killing his estranged wife's best friend Jennifer Patelchus and her daughter
00:17 Gretel.
00:18 That's an example of how we need to continue to make sure that our laws are contemporary
00:24 and meet the needs of the community.
00:26 Much of the focus has been on a new firearms act which is before the upper house.
00:31 It is not new legislation that will make any difference to those events, it's actually
00:35 action on other legislation around domestic violence, it's action on ensuring police are
00:41 adequately resourced and trained.
00:43 We can pass as many laws as we like, but if we can't administer them well then that's
00:48 not going to get to the root of the problem.
00:50 A big part of that is left up to police. The Commissioner says officers respond to 60,000
00:55 family and domestic violence reports a year, about one every six minutes.
01:00 They have to balance all these complex issues that are playing out in front of them, sometimes
01:07 in rapid time.
01:08 But do they have the time and the training to properly make those decisions?
01:13 Yes.
01:15 Issues in the broader approach to domestic violence have been brought into sharp focus
01:19 by protocols seemingly being followed but failing to prevent the tragedy in Floriant.
01:24 Domestic violence services say there needs to be a greater focus on addressing perpetrators
01:29 behaviour and intervening earlier to protect women.
01:32 And our doors are open to take more advice, more suggestions about how we can continue
01:38 to work on this issue.
01:39 Liberal leader Libby Metham has written to the Corruption and Crime Commission asking
01:43 it to investigate the handling of Arielle Bombara's concerns about her father.
