Forecasters watching the Caribbean for potential tropical development in early June

Just days after hurricane season begins, it's possible the first tropical system of the season could form.

00:00 Big story #3, we're jumping into June and for meteorologists and anyone along the coast,

00:05 that means we're jumping right into hurricane season.

00:06 Yeah, and I mean, let's face it, just the start of it doesn't necessarily mean much

00:11 as far as what we'll see, but it is a good reminder for you to be prepared for hurricane

00:16 season.

00:17 I love the way you phrase that, right?

00:18 It's not like we snap our finger, turn the calendar, and all of a sudden there are storms,

00:21 but next week we could be watching as a solved frontal boundary this time of year, we're

00:25 going to have to watch for any potential development into the Caribbean.

00:28 Yeah, this is a time of year we can get those gyres kind of working their way through some

00:32 of the Central American off the Yucatan, so as any bit of energy then tries to work its

00:36 way from that into that boundary, it could really spin up and develop into some more

00:41 activity for us.

00:42 And while that could bring some flooding to Cuba, Hispaniola, and Jamaica, it is unlikely

00:46 to impact the United States, but AccuWeather is calling for 4-6 direct impacts from storms

00:51 this hurricane season.

00:52 A lot of that driven by the above historical average sea surface temperatures, the water's

00:57 very warm for what we call the Atlantic hurricane season breeding grounds, zones I guess, where

01:03 those cyclones typically are born and start to develop.

01:06 And that's why we think it's going to be a supercharged season, we're calling for 20-25

01:10 named storms, 8-12 of those being hurricanes, of those 8-12, 4-7 being major hurricanes,

01:15 that is category 3 or higher, so winds of 111 mph or greater.

01:19 This is not a panic, this is getting prepared for the upcoming season.

01:22 And obviously with more, there's a little bit more likeliness of having some of those
