The large number of foreign workers arriving at KLIA today
00:12
is due to employers rushing to bring them into the country before the June 1st deadline.
00:17
This is the explanation the Immigration Department provided
00:20
after a viral video showed large groups of migrant workers
00:23
sitting on the floor at KLIA Terminal 1.
00:26
The Home Ministry previously said unused quotas for foreign workers
00:29
would be cancelled on June 1st to free up hiring quotas that have been frozen since last year.
00:34
The Immigration Department said it expects the number of arrivals to continue increasing until tomorrow.
00:39
It also said it is working with Malaysia Airport's Holdings Berhad
00:43
to manage congestion and ensure the comfort of KLIA's passengers.
00:47
The Department said it would increase the number of immigration officers at the two KLIA terminals
00:52
as well as open more counters to expedite the screening and verification of the foreign workers.
