00:00 My name is Jeremy Corbyn and I'm standing to be the independent MP for Islington North.
00:07 Democracy has been denied.
00:11 Islington North Labour members were denied any vote to decide who their MP is or who their candidate is.
00:25 And if you shut down the voice of people, that democratic voice, then you've got problems.
00:32 And the problems are that people don't like it.
00:35 They want their voice to be heard and we are making sure our voice is heard.
00:40 That's why in response to many, many requests from many people, I've decided I will run and fight to be the independent MP for Islington North.
00:50 Even as I'm speaking now, there are thousands of people outside Hackney Town Hall in support of Diane Abbott.
00:58 Obviously I'm not there with her, but I've sent a message of support.
01:10 Because democracy within parties as well as within communities is a very important part of our lives.
01:17 Democracy isn't just about how you vote every four or five years.
01:22 It is about your right to speak, your right to know, your right to organise, your right to demonstrate, your right to dissent.
01:29 It's not about shutting down dissent, silencing people who disagree.
01:34 It's not about the endless stream of anti-libertarian bills that this government has introduced.
01:41 And I want to be in the next parliament to try and reprieve us from the situation where our voices will forever be silenced.
