What is International Missing Children’s Day and why is it important to remember?

00:00 According to the charity Missing People, over 70,000 young people are reported missing each

00:07 year in the UK. Some of the most notorious missing person cases in the UK include the

00:12 disappearance of Madeleine McCann, who has been missing for 17 years as of this May,

00:18 the disappearance of 7-year-old Amina Khan, who was last seen in 2011, and the disappearance

00:23 of Ben Needham, a toddler who vanished while on holiday with his family in Greece in 1991.

00:29 International Missing Children's Day falls on May 25th and on this day, charities urge

00:34 members of the public to take to social media and share images of those who are still missing

00:39 in order to raise awareness, whilst also encouraging others to celebrate stories of those who have

00:44 been found.

00:45 Whilst 52% of resolved incidents involving missing children end within 8 hours, the UK

00:51 Missing Persons Unit did record that there were over 1,500 children still long-term missing,

00:57 the symbol of IMCD is the 'forget me not' flower which encourages those to continue
