00:00 Adult Literacy Programme, Read Easy, estimates that 2.4 million adults in England are functionally
00:09 illiterate and Oakhampton's Read Easy branch is trying to support those adults in West
00:15 Devon. A relatively new endeavour, they have already seen some fantastic results. Two pupils,
00:23 Kenneth and Brian, describe how learning to read has changed their life.
00:28 My name is Kenneth. I joined this programme almost one year. This programme has helped
00:37 me a lot to be more confident and helped me to read so many articles. I love it. And now
00:47 I'm passionate in English and learning from this programme. Thank you very much.
00:56 I started back in July and I was really nervous to start with, but it's like meeting a whole
01:04 new set of friends. And I'm getting on really well and it changes your life so much and
01:11 confidence. You go out to a burger brand and you can actually read what's there. So yeah,
01:18 I would suggest just get on with it and don't worry about worrying about it. Yeah.
01:26 Coach Sun describes her experience.
01:29 I was looking for something to do with my time. I had a bit of spare time and I wanted
01:35 to do something useful. And I noticed an advert asking for volunteers to help a new programme
01:42 called Read Easy, which is to help coach adults who had missed out on their, on reading when
01:49 they were at school. So I put myself forward and at that time they didn't have a reader
01:55 for me. They said, yes, we'd love you to come along, but we don't have anyone that wants
01:59 help at the moment. So I waited for a while and I did the training and then they said,
02:04 we've got a chap for you in North Thornton. So on a day in July, I went along to meet
02:10 Brian at the cafe in Thornton and we hit it off and I started to work with him and it's
02:18 been a fantastic journey. I've really, really enjoyed working with him and watching his
02:23 progress and watching the change in him as he got better and better with reading. I think
02:29 I've been lucky because it was the dog to help him. He was very bright and he had great
02:34 vocabulary. He just missed out on the reading bit. So it's been a real pleasure and it's
02:40 been wonderful.
