Rishi Sunak said the public could “safely assume” the pensions triple-lock will remain in place throughout the next Parliament. Asked whether he thought that was affordable, the Prime Minister told the Liaison Committee: “I do, because the track record of the Government is that we make priorities, and making sure that if you have worked hard all your life you have the dignity that you deserve in retirement is important to me, it’s important to the Government." 00:00 Do you genuinely think that's affordable?
00:02 I do because the track record of the government is that we make priorities and making sure
00:11 that if you've worked hard all your life, you have the dignity that you deserve in retirement
00:15 is important to me, it's important to the government and the triple lock is an expression
00:19 of that.
00:20 And so I'm actually proud that as a result of the triple lock, pensioners are much less
00:24 likely to be in poverty.
00:27 They will see an almost £900 increase in just a couple of weeks in the state pension
00:31 and that comes on the top of significant support over the winter to help with energy bills,
00:36 doubling of the winter fuel payment.
00:37 And it speaks to the kind of country that we believe in and society that we live in
00:41 and making sure we look after people at that stage of their lives I think is the right
00:45 thing to do and the triple lock is what this government, previous Conservative government
00:49 introduced and we've protected and will continue to do so.
