Actors Caleb Landry Jones & Jojo T. Gibbs talk to The Inside Reel about approach, psychology and intent in regards to their new action thriller from director Luc Besson and Briarcliff Entertainment: "Dogman".

00:03 I mean, Kale, brilliant, because it's

00:25 so hard to do what you did.

00:28 Because you have love, hate, regret, vices,

00:32 but no malice in this man.

00:34 I mean, it's a hard balance to talk about.

00:37 Could you talk about sort of that build?

00:39 Because there's that rhythm to him that has to be within you.

00:43 Yeah, once I read the script, that's

00:46 what Luke was talking about mostly,

00:50 was despite everything that happened to him,

00:54 it's about what he does or how he still is, who he is.

01:00 And this is, I think, something that Luke loved

01:06 so much about the character and was so excited about.

01:13 And I was too.

01:14 Yeah, other than that, there's not much to really say.

01:20 No, it's hard.

01:21 Other than going, all right, and then doing

01:25 whatever work to get there.

01:27 But I'm not sure what that work is, because it's

01:30 tough to think about it that way.

01:33 My colleagues are struggling to get a handle on you.

01:37 They would like to know who you are.

01:38 Do you have any children, Douglas?

01:43 Hundreds.

01:45 Dogs have a real sense of family.

01:47 So they rally around in the bad times

01:49 and form a solid, united entity.

01:51 The weak are immediately eliminated,

02:01 devoured by the others.

02:02 It seems like a really sort of action and reaction.

02:06 JoJo, actually, could you talk about perspective and--

02:09 Like, she brought a lot of stuff out of Douglas.

02:14 She brought a lot of--

02:15 Oh, yeah.

02:16 And it's only because of JoJo and also the character--

02:20 Evelyn.

02:21 And what Evelyn is in the film that I get to be kind of a

02:28 certain way or something like that.

02:30 Yeah, well, psychiatrists, they try to pull out as much

02:35 information as possible.

02:36 And I think that's the catalyst of creating the

02:39 storyline of Dog Man and the complexities of the character

02:42 in terms of why is this person like this?

02:46 And hopefully giving the audience empathy towards the

02:53 human experience and how people end up where they are.

02:57 Do you have any children, Douglas?

02:59 Hundreds.

03:01 You're referring to your dogs?

03:05 Yes, they're my babies.

03:08 Their love saved me a thousand times.

03:11 I owe them my life.

03:13 Would you say that you love your dogs more than you love

03:16 human beings?

03:16 Absolutely.

03:17 The more I got to know humans, the more I love dogs.

03:21 What qualities do they possess that humans don't have?

03:25 Dogs have beauty without vanity, force without

03:27 insolence, bravery without ferocity, and all the virtues

03:30 humans have without any of the vices.

03:33 As far as I can tell, they only have one flaw.

03:37 Which is?

03:39 They trust humans.

03:41 That's the hardest thing because there's such empathy

03:43 for him.

03:44 You're not going to forgive him or you're not going to

03:46 embrace everything he does, but you can accept him for

03:50 what he's doing.

03:52 Could you talk about looking at that?

03:53 Because she has to understand that, too.

03:56 Yeah, I have a few friends who are therapists or

04:00 psychiatrists.

04:01 And so from knowing them, I know that they're generally

04:05 people who've had maybe traumatic experiences

04:08 themselves.

04:09 And so that probably influenced them going into that

04:13 type of career.

04:14 Because if you're that type of person taking on someone's

04:17 heavy stuff all the time, it has to be a higher interest

04:21 in it beyond money.

04:22 Because I don't even think they get paid well.

04:23 I don't know.

04:25 I don't know.

04:27 I had a doctor with a jag once.

04:29 Oh, a psychiatrist?

04:31 You know what?

04:31 They do get paid well, actually.

04:33 Because therapists--

04:34 Wore the shirt three buttons down.

04:35 OK, so yeah, he had money money.

04:38 Anyway, sorry.

04:41 Yes, so-so.

04:43 Oh, but no, she said she took any time that she could get.

04:47 So she was new to it.

04:48 So yes, I was like, considering the character and

04:51 considering that she could probably at least empathize to

04:56 the human experience of overcoming obstacles in terms

04:59 of Douglas' experience.

05:05 But with humans, the weak and cowardly always find a way to

05:09 survive.
