Transcript
00:00 Mr Massey we're here at Ashwood Nurseries and with you is your fantastic gardener Connie.
00:06 Yeah. She's been given a special award just fill us in on what the award is first of all and why she's deserved it.
00:14 The award is really to remember my previous head gardener Adam Greathead who died in his sleep aged 27
00:25 who was a brilliant gardener and we decided we wanted a practical award rather than an academic award
00:35 and the idea is that Connie works with us in the garden with Nigel Hopes, head gardener, and Chris and Caroline
00:47 and we try and teach her all the skills we possibly can. She also takes part with the breeding
00:52 and then the following six months she goes down to Great Dixter and works with Fergus Garrett and his fantastic team down there.
01:02 Yeah. So it's quite an honour isn't it Connie? I'm very lucky. Yeah yeah.
01:08 And how long have you been involved here at Ashwood then? Well for six weeks. Yeah yeah.
01:16 And you're a local that's Gornhall not too far. Have you always had gardening in the blood?
01:20 Do you come from a family of gardeners? Yeah yeah. My biggest childhood inspiration was my grandad.
01:26 Was it? Yeah. He taught me a lot of gardening, a lot of vegetable gardening. Yeah.
01:34 And then my parents had a great allotment in the garden and a big, a group of chickens and a pond and a lot of different gardening techniques.
01:46 You've got an ecological background as well so it's all not just the plants, it's the insects, the wildlife.
01:55 Yeah. Wildlife, nature, anything outside. Yeah yeah. But hopefully this is the start of my horticultural career.
02:04 Yeah. I mean and what a garden to be working at. It's stunning isn't it? You know.
02:09 It truly is a garden for all seasons isn't it? I mean that right of colour we've got behind you there you know.
02:15 So yeah. This is Trina. I knew that John. I know the common name, the daff.
02:22 Have you got a favourite spot in the garden yourself Connie that you like to kind of be working in?
02:28 No, it's a very difficult question. Yeah yeah. I love it all. Yeah. It's very difficult to choose.
02:35 Maybe one day I will have my favourite type of plant and maybe that will stem to my favourite area in the garden.
02:44 Or maybe that says a lot you know. You don't have one particular plant because you love it all.
02:50 Do you know what I mean? I can't choose my favourite colour let alone my favourite plant.
02:54 Yeah yeah. Well we wish you all the success in your horticultural career and winner of the Adam Award, Connie.
03:02 Whey!
03:04 Go and shut the gate and then carry on walking on like.
