Launceston joins safer roads campaign (5/3/24)

00:00 We're incredibly proud because Launceston City Council is the first Tasmanian council to come

00:05 and join us for National Road Safety Week as a yellow ribbon road safety council.

00:10 It started off 12 years ago when my own beautiful daughter Sarah Fraser was travelling down to

00:16 Sarton University in Charles Sturt in Wagga Wagga. Her car broke down on the Hume Freeway

00:22 but the road wasn't built to specification and there was a barrier that ran beside it.

00:27 Unfortunately she couldn't get over that barrier either because of the fact that there were

00:31 brambles all the way along. It was only 1.5 metres wide from the emergency lane. So Sarah unfortunately

00:38 was left in harm's way. She phoned me but I was working for Roads Maritime Services as a manager

00:45 and unfortunately when she rang me I was in a meeting. She called and said 'Dad there are cars

00:52 and trucks passing just seven metres away from me. I'm afraid I could get killed here.' And at 12.30

00:58 I came out of that meeting and tried to ring her. At 12.32 she'd been killed by a distracted truck

01:04 driver and she was left in pieces and decapitated on the Hume Freeway. This is a true pandemic but

01:11 by working together we've got an opportunity to make a change and I'm incredibly proud

01:16 that Launceston City Council is our first council in Tasmania to come on board.
