00:00 As the dust settled on 2023 in tennis, we saw major winners records broken by
00:08 none other than Novak Djokovic. Icons of the game such as Rafael Nadal looking
00:12 likely to be moving on and young stars breaking boundaries to reach the top of
00:17 the world rankings. Let's start by looking at Nadal and a young star who
00:22 could go on to follow his Spanish heroes footsteps.
00:26 I mean Nadal, I mean yes, he is without a doubt one of the best competitors across
00:33 tennis and sport in general as well. It kind of almost feels like Nadal hasn't
00:38 left because literally Alcazar does seem to be like his replacement and it's
00:44 kind of incredible to see there are so many similarities between them. It
00:48 remains to be seen if he can come back. I mean I would never ever count him out
00:52 to be honest because he's shown multiple times that he can come back from an
00:58 injury and go right to the top again and a lot of players haven't been able to do
01:03 that. There's been a steady resurgence of form by Russian Daniel Medvedev who
01:09 reached the first major final of the year in the Australian Open. Having
01:13 fallen short at the final hurdle again, there's still big hopes for him in the
01:18 future as well as Carlos Alcaraz, another young player competing at the
01:22 very top. Medvedev is unbelievable, what a competitor he is. I mean he does not
01:29 give up, he can just keep on rallying from the baseline over and
01:33 over and Medvedev is showing that he's back in there. I think he did have a bit
01:37 of a kind of lackluster 12 months. I don't know whether obviously being
01:44 banned from Wimbledon and that whole thing about him being Russian had an
01:48 impact on him. I don't think it can be easy to deal with that, to be made to
01:52 feel like you're responsible for something that isn't within your control
01:56 but it's great to see that he's back at the top of his game. As the tennis world
02:01 are preparing for the action in 2024, who could go on to become a major winner in
02:06 the new year? I mean in terms of surprise, I mean I know Alcaraz isn't a surprise
02:11 but I didn't think he was going to be so quick to master all three surfaces so
02:17 that just shows that he's got a great future ahead. The fact that he's already
02:21 won Wimbledon at 20, you know he's got a hard-court slam and we know that he's
02:26 going to be great on clay anyway so that just shows I was a bit dubious last year
02:30 because I thought okay he won the US Open in Djokovic's absence, he got the
02:34 number one ranking with very few points because Djokovic wasn't around to kind
02:39 of challenge him and I think for me he's really proved that he is going to be
02:44 the next person to watch. A roundup by a tennis expert looking at the fierce
02:50 competitors at the top of the sport right now as more young talent continue
02:54 to emerge and challenge the likes of Djokovic. It guarantees more high-quality
02:59 tennis and more drama than ever before.
