00:28 And we're going to be playing a World Cup game.
00:30 And we're going to be playing a World Cup game.
00:32 Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the program.
00:35 Hard work, integrity, patriotism, tolerance, civic mindedness,
00:41 compliance with the law, respect of the common good
00:44 are some of the things that the President of the Republic
00:48 has recommended to the youth.
00:50 If the President recommended these values,
00:54 it's also because somewhere in his speech to the youth,
00:57 he said they are falling short in some of these things
01:02 and it's a problem for our country and for their future.
01:07 Then, a question we're going to answer on PressR today is
01:12 are Cameroonian youth responsible for their problem?
01:17 Are Cameroonian youth responsible for their plight in Cameroon?
01:23 And to talk about today's topic, we have invited two youth
01:28 and two senior persons who...
01:33 And of course, Professor Awad, whom I've known for close to 30 years.
01:38 That's interesting.
01:39 And it's a society, when it concerns the youth,
01:43 I always try to make myself available so that we can talk about things that really concern us.
01:48 Yes, thank you very much for coming.
01:50 And you've talked about Joshua. Joshua Fonkem is a youth.
01:54 By the time you got used to Professor Kumawa,
01:58 Joshua was not born because he's less than 30 years.
02:02 And that's why I brought young people to this set to see exactly what they are doing.
02:08 Joshua Fonkem, he's the President of Next Big Generation.
02:14 You're welcome to PressR.
02:15 Thank you for having us. Thank you.
02:17 Yes, what is Next Big Generation?
02:19 Next Big Generation is a vision which is aimed at transforming like the name,
02:25 the next generation is bringing up new people, a generation where young people are responsible,
02:31 young people take advantage of every opportunity, young people are being the future of tomorrow.
02:38 Okay, we're going to see how that applies to what you're doing.
02:42 In the course of this program, I have another young person here, a lady.
02:47 And I made sure that we had a lady on this set, Nya Tonda Laurie.
02:53 She is the Director of Communication of Next Big Generation.
02:58 Laurie, you're welcome to PressR.
03:00 Thank you.
03:02 How big is Next Big Generation?
03:05 Next Big Generation, I think it's going to be bigger than your imagination.
03:09 If we are able to implement all what we have backstage
03:13 in order to bring forward all of the necessary things for the youth.
03:16 How many of you are in Next Big Generation?
03:19 Next Big Generation is a team that keeps growing because we started with five people,
03:23 later on ten, and right now we're with twenty people.
03:27 And we think we're going to increase the numbers as time comes by.
03:29 Okay, we look forward to seeing you actually transform the youth of today
03:34 and actually make the youth the future of Cameroon.
03:39 We need Professor Koum Pascal, our coordinator of the National Civic Education Program.
03:46 He's also the technical advisor to the Minister of Youth Affairs and Civic Education.
03:52 We're glad to have you on our set, Prof.
03:55 You're welcome, Mr. Kilian.
03:58 It's always a pleasure to be on this stage to talk about issues concerning the nation,
04:05 and especially today, which is the Youth Day. Happy Youth Day.
04:09 Happy Youth Day to you, happy Youth Day to all Cameroonians, especially the youth.
04:14 Ladies and gentlemen, meet Emanuela Vemnuy.
04:19 This time she's the one who starts discussions on press by setting the stage,
04:26 by setting the pace with press review.
04:29 What the newspapers fed us in the week that just passed.
04:34 Emanuela.
04:36 Cameroonian newspapers have been capturing news around the increase of fuel prices in Cameroon for their readers.
04:47 Fuel prices surge and fueling resentment in the voice newspaper,
04:52 triggering fresh fears of inflation and rate hikes in Eko Outlook.
04:56 The poll sees severe high cost of living lingering as government raises fuel prices again.
05:02 Just when the dawn wants to know if palliative measures will suffice,
05:07 government justifies hike in fuel prices in The Guardian post.
05:11 Six government ministers detail buffer measures in Cameroon Insider,
05:16 says it will save the state $230 billion for development projects in municipal updates.
05:23 Before the Sun presents gains of this price hike to the common man,
05:28 what The Horizon describes as "boom to the masses",
05:31 the post newspaper says after fuel price increase,
05:35 salaries are expected to rise as government engages dialogues with trade unions.
05:40 Then the Bermenda 2 divisional officer and five others are kidnapped in municipal updates.
05:46 The Guardian post reports that the DO and five others were kidnapped by suspected Amber fighters.
05:51 The voice says DO was abducted and hooked to Mkambe and Savos street freedom from Amber den.
05:58 The freedom of DO also carried by Cameroon Tribune and The Horizon.
06:03 The post precises that the DO was released after a night in Amber captivity.
06:08 The same DO that contradicts Northwest Governor in The Guardian post saying he escaped from Amber camp,
06:14 while Governor indicates he was freed by the military.
06:17 The 58th Youth Day then emphasizes economic patriotism in the dawn
06:22 and Civic Watch engages in sensitizing Northwest youths on countering hate speech in municipal updates.
06:30 West Governor accuses school authorities of complicity in rising drug consumption in schools.
06:37 In The Guardian post, the Cameroon Business Today presents 11 success stories of youths meeting the import substitution policy
06:46 at a time the 7th edition of Youth Parliament is in course in Cameroon Tribune.
06:52 Poor Bia is set to address youths on Saturday in Cameroon Insider.
06:56 The Guardian post then puts at the fore what Bia should tell the youths.
07:00 TV sink morned boss is reported on bended knees before authorities in Yaounde after flag gaffe in municipal updates.
07:08 Insists non-Mali's behind blunder in Cameroon Insider.
07:12 The Guardian then criticizes for Cameroon flag misuse in The Voice.
07:17 At a time greed and self-centeredness tolling positive opposition coalition for 2025 presidential elections.
07:24 In The Guardian post, Cabrali B distances self from Camto as opposition coalition choice in municipal updates.
07:31 Then Dr Simon Monsu warns that Cameroonians must resist any attempt to set aside constitution in succession at 8.2D in the post weekend.
07:41 Where the papers for you.
07:43 Until I come your way again, this is your hour with the press.
07:47 Thank you very much Emanuela. It is our hour with the press.
07:57 Now we are going to dive into our discussion and the theme again if you are just joining us is
08:04 Are Cameroonian youth their own problem?
08:08 We have two young Cameroonians with us on the set and two senior persons on the set and the two generations.
08:19 We are going to see what is it that is separating the youth.
08:24 What is it that the youth want to have that they don't have?
08:28 Why are some of the youth blaming the older generation and whether this older generation feel that they are responsible also for what is happening to the youth that are complaining?
08:42 That feel that the world they live in is not longer having the same opportunities that the elders had before they were brought to this world.
08:53 That is our theme and we have one of our guests is Julius Fondon who has written, he is an author and he has written a book on youth and trying to tell the youth what they should do to be responsible like the head of state said.
09:13 Hard work, integrity, patriotism, tolerance, civic mindedness, compliance with the law and respect for the common good among so many other things.
09:25 Now we are going to start with the address of the head of state to the youth.
09:31 Beginning with the youth of course I am going to start with you Joshua.
09:35 What is it that caught your attention in the address of the president to young people like you?
09:43 Thank you so much Mr. Kilian for having me on set. It is a great pleasure to be here today to share my view.
09:52 First of all from what the president, the head of state, head of government, head of state sorry, the speech he made was wonderful.
10:02 There are things, key things he said which really matched me. One of them was tolerance, hard work and the reason I picked this to be so remarkable is because you know a lot of young people they have so much to do.
10:15 They have tried a whole lot of stuff but then the limitation is once they try they think ok once I have this idea I will just flow to it. It is a bit of rosary.
10:23 Nothing is going to happen along the line you know. But then to be successful you need a whole lot of hard work.
10:31 He said equally something is not just about the talent. You have to put extra work. So I may really be talented but if I don't put work and putting hard work it won't just show up immediately.
10:41 I need to be tolerant, patient. Tolerant equal to talking to people. You are dealing with people and sometimes they tell you no. You need to press up.
10:48 Put more effort. Just trying and you just let go, complain. No, no, no. So I think what Mr. Bia said, Honorable, His Excellency President Paul Bia said is quite amazing.
11:05 If every young person would take this, take this home, hard work, tolerance is amazing.
11:11 Ms. Laurie? Well for me what was really interesting in his speech was when he talked about courage and hard work.
11:18 Because for you to be in the field, for you to be recognized you have to be courageous to attack the field because we know it is difficult out there.
11:25 In order to achieve your goals you have to be courageous. If you have something to put on or if you have something to portray to the world you have to be courageous enough to take the steps that are needed.
11:35 Because I always say this, Bert, that it's what you do that attracts people towards you. If you don't do something nobody will have your attention.
11:43 So I always say that if you are courageous enough to prove what you have and be hard working because you can be courageous and other people shut you down.
11:50 But then are you courageous enough, are you hard working enough to do the train of life?
11:55 It's a difficult journey. It's a long way to go. And if you want to be courageous and make yourself known you have to put forth what you have, be hard working, be perseverant and I'm sure you may achieve your goals.
12:08 Did you feel challenged by those things that the head of state said?
12:12 Of course, personally I feel really challenged starting from school to where I am because when we grow up we know our parents have already drawn a path line for us.
12:22 But then when we get to understand what education is, what the world is all about, when we get to face or be in contact with the society, we get to see that we have more to give outside.
12:32 We get to find our own identity and now we need courage in order to prove it out, in order to reveal it.
12:38 In order to say, "Oh no, mum or dad's opinion didn't matter at this point of my life. I want to be this, I want to do this."
12:44 So I think my courage came when I discovered my personality, like what it can offer to the world.
12:50 So with that I got really triggered throughout my life but let's just say I'm not yet at the point but I'm starting something.
12:58 And I guess the hard work and the courage that our excellency just mentioned, I think I'm going to follow that and I'm going to pursue it.
13:06 Yes, we encourage you, the way you speak, we know that you are courageous, you are hard working and you should be an example for your kind, the youth to follow.
13:17 Yes, Prof. Kum Pascal-Awa, you've listened to these two young Cameroonians, they sound really convincing.
13:29 What do you say about this, their reaction and then what did you pick from the speech of the President to the youth?
13:39 First, your reaction to the way they have come up.
13:42 Yes, thank you Mr. Kilian. Joshua and Laurie, I consider they are an example of youths who are daring.
13:58 Because there is no other thing that the head of state is telling the youths but telling them that they should try,
14:05 they should make sure that they make an effort to do things differently.
14:12 And I believe that the next big generation which they have should certainly be an association or an NGO, non-governmental organization that they have set up.
14:24 That is the way. Because the head of state, when he was talking, he emphasized on employment of young people.
14:34 I don't think that they have another job before creating this.
14:40 Because that is exactly the prescription when the head of state said he was emphasizing on self-employment.
14:47 And I think Laurie and Joshua and the 18 others who are in the team are trying to self-employ, to employ themselves.
15:00 And that created a situation. And it is exactly what is needed of young people.
15:05 Because they make up 70% of the Cameroonian population, which means that the workforce is them, the industry is them.
15:14 But then, one thing, for you to be able to do what they are doing, or for you to sustain, you must fully exercise moral and civic probity to get there.
15:30 Because if you don't, then within a few years, you drop out of it.
15:36 Thank you very much. Julius, you've listened to these two young Cameroonians, Joshua and Laurie.
15:45 They sound really convincing. What do you say about this, before you go to trying to bring out what you gathered from the speech of the President of the Republic?
15:56 I think I see in them a certain level of courage. They seem to know what they are looking for.
16:04 And if I could link this directly with the speech of the head of state, he talked about organization.
16:10 We need to be organized to be able to achieve results.
16:13 And as the Prof said, you can be better organized sometimes within associations or within non-governmental organizations
16:20 that seek to promote the vision that you have for yourself and for society.
16:27 As you also rightly mentioned in my book, Remain the Promise, I talk about the need for youth transformational leadership.
16:35 And yesterday, the President also said something very, very interesting, I found very interesting.
16:41 It was about accountable leadership.
16:44 And he said this, I think, in connection with the Football Federation, where the government is spending so much supporting federations, yet there are no results.
16:54 And he said he has instructed the Minister of Youth and Sport to make sure that Cameroonians have value for their money.
17:00 The Minister of Sports and Physical Education.
17:02 The Cameroonian public have value for their money.
17:06 And we do know that around the Football Federation right now, they are being run by youths.
17:11 So I think the President is sending a very clear message that leadership accountability is not just something that remains at the higher levels of government,
17:20 but goes down into the structures that support government policy, which are also run by youths.
17:25 So I like the courage of these young people.
17:29 I talk with Joshua backstage, and I'm learning a lot about what he is doing.
17:34 And as I said, this falls within the inline with what the President was saying about the need for youths to organize, to be disciplined,
17:41 to use the word disciplined, and also to be innovative.
17:45 Otherwise, if they continue doing things in 2024 the way myself and Pascal were doing it 30 years ago,
17:54 then there's just no point in having young people around.
17:57 They need to be seeing what we were able not to accomplish, use the resources that they have around them,
18:03 and make their lives better.
18:06 Thank you, Ro. And you're talking about the fact that the President talked about organization around things like sports.
18:13 He talked about the disappointment we had in the early elimination of Cameroon,
18:19 the United Middle Alliance of Cameroon in AFCON 2023.
18:24 And at the same time, he was talking about the early elimination,
18:28 he made allusion to another sports person, Francis Ngan, who is organized and he gives results.
18:38 And he's courageous.
18:39 And he's courageous. So that's exactly, we like the way he put the two together to show that, well, he knows what's happening,
18:48 he's following what the youths are doing closely.
18:51 Now, let us just get an excerpt of what the President said to the youth.
19:11 Yes, we are waiting to have an excerpt of one of the key messages that the President gave the youth in his speech.
19:23 Can we have that?
19:26 ...stewardship. The government has worked relentlessly and resolutely towards this goal.
19:34 However, I believe that our youths will be unable to leverage the opportunities available to them
19:44 unless they fully embrace the civic and moral values that are the foundation of social life.
19:55 This includes hard work, integrity, patriotism, tolerance, civic-mindedness, compliance with the new law, and respect of the common good.
20:11 Today, we are all witnesses of the gradual dissolution of these values in our society, and unfortunately among the youths as well.
20:24 Moral decay, irresponsible and deviant behavior, violence, indiscipline, alcohol and drug abuse, and intolerance
20:39 are on the rise in our society. Schools are a new exception.
20:46 Social media, now the preferred means of expression for young people, is being abused and is becoming the stage of various forms of extremism.
21:01 Once again, I urge you to be fully aware of this situation.
21:07 I also encourage parents and more generally all educators to fully assume their responsibility.
21:16 Although attitudes and behaviors are changing inexorably, they should not relent in their efforts
21:29 to continue educating and mentoring our youths.
21:36 They should continue to instill in them values that will enable them to encourage life's changes.
21:48 Very hard message there to the youth. Laura, the President is telling the youth that he knows so many of them who are going astray.
22:03 Yes, because let's just say out there there are many people who go astray because of social media, if I'm to name like he said in his speech as well.
22:12 Because social media has become a pitch where we found everything and nothing.
22:17 We don't get, for me I always say that the social media, we come across things that are cool.
