Canterbury city councillor Chris Cornell speaking at a public meeting in Herne Bay.
Transcript
00:00 Do we need another plaza?
00:02 No!
00:03 We've got a public square by the swim baths,
00:06 and a public square by the clock tower,
00:09 both of which are essentially non-peaceful.
00:11 [applause]
00:13 We've got a square for the city,
00:16 and all of a sudden, people are actually going to start
00:18 trying to make it into some type of market,
00:20 which is a great idea, but a piece of public space
00:22 doesn't revive your economy.
00:24 Right? It only revives your economy
00:26 if there's any job.
00:28 Right?
00:30 So, we came into power in the summer,
00:33 and I kind of inherited this project.
00:35 It's a bit like a kind of unwarranted Christmas present,
00:38 so to speak.
00:40 And I think essentially the problem we have here
00:43 is that there's a bit of messed up building, right?
00:45 I think that most of us agree that we should find a way
00:48 to encourage people to cycle.
00:49 Most of us don't mind slower speed limits
00:51 if they keep people safe.
00:53 But the problem we have is essentially
00:55 you could have done all of that,
00:56 and the group could have ended at Memorial Park.
00:58 You didn't need to take it all the way to the seafront.
01:00 And if you did have a problem, which essentially
01:02 was kind of boy racers going up and down the seafront,
01:04 you could have put bums in the road.
01:06 [applause]
01:08 [cheers and applause]
01:11 [APPLAUSE]
