South East Water are struggling to keep taps flowing in the sweltering heat, leaving hundreds of households across the county without water and forcing residents to queue at collection centres.

Meghan Shaw reports.

00:00It's ridiculous, seems to be the underlying sentiment from residents queuing in Herne
00:06Bay to receive bottled water, after supplies under South East Water failed again.
00:12This is one of many moments the company has found themselves in hot water, after outages
00:18around the county struck during the hottest May bank holiday weekend ever recorded.
00:25Queues formed in Ultera Business Park, where the water collection was situated, while
00:29residents grew hot and bothered in their cars.
00:32How long have you been waiting for?
00:35About 20 minutes for now, but that's for now, see what happens, but...
00:40It just seems to be too much development and not enough investment in the infrastructure,
00:44but I think the reservoir at Waldo has gone over during that.
00:48The queue this morning was over the other side of the Thanet Way.
00:51I'll come to get it at 9 o'clock and I'll give up the deal.
00:54I've got a wife at home, she's just come out of hospital, she's had a bowel operation,
00:58so she needs to flush the toilet, so I need water this morning.
01:04It's definitely not as hot today as it has been throughout the bank holiday weekend,
01:09but it's still very warm, and residents have been telling me they've been waiting
01:13in their cars for up to 20 minutes until they're given bottled water.
01:18My car's telling me it's 22 degrees inside, and I've only been sat here five minutes,
01:23and definitely sweating, and these conditions aren't ideal if you've not had much water
01:27to drink in the first place.
01:29And for vulnerable residents who qualified to have their water delivered,
01:34Faith has also gone down the drain.
01:36Monday evening, we went to have the water for our tablets, and there was nothing in the tax.
01:44Couldn't take any tablets, we just didn't have anything out to take it with.
01:48And we didn't have any water until last night when a friend brought some around,
01:54and then they actually delivered last night on 11 o'clock.
01:58South East Water explained that the outages are due to increased demand in hot weather.
02:03They apologise and have asked for customers to only use water for essential purposes.
02:08That is drinking, washing, and cooking.
02:11But with rising temperatures here to stay, it seems likely that this summer could be the hottest on record.
02:18If South East Water are already struggling in May,
02:22could they remain in the hot seat all the way until September?
