00:03 Waste disposal is always a hot topic among environmentalists,
00:08 as the irresponsible management of household waste
00:12 can negatively affect the planet.
00:15 In 2018, Dr. Maisarah Tajuddin founded Green Waste Selangor
00:20 to advocate for the responsible handling of domestic waste,
00:24 especially used cooking oil.
00:28 Initially, the NGO would collect used cooking oil
00:31 from nearby households and sell it to recycling centers.
00:36 But realizing the need for something more creative
00:39 to draw the community's attention to their cause,
00:42 JWS came up with the idea of making soaps out of the oil.
00:48 Our main focus is actually to give them the awareness
00:52 and so how to attract this committee
00:55 to hear about this campaign.
00:57 And so that's come the idea of why not we
01:01 give them some hands-on workshop and so on how to do the soap.
01:07 We offer the committee, let's learn how to make soap
01:09 from used cooking oil.
01:10 Before they learn, they have to hear about this campaign.
01:15 That's actually the objective of doing this.
01:19 F&T Lifestyle was recently present to witness firsthand
01:23 how JWS makes the soaps.
01:26 First, the cooking oil is collected and filtered
01:29 to remove any residue.
01:31 This ensures there are no lumps in the final product.
01:35 In a separate heat-resistant container,
01:38 lye or sodium hydroxide is mixed with water
01:41 until it is dissolved properly.
01:45 As lye can be corrosive, precautions
01:47 are taken by wearing face masks and gloves.
01:51 Next, the solution is poured into the oil
01:55 and whisked or blended until it reaches
01:57 the consistency of caramel.
02:01 Fragrance oils, colouring, or even dried herbs
02:05 are added for an extra layer of depth to the soaps
02:08 before the mixture is poured into moulds to set.
02:13 At room temperature, it can take three to four weeks
02:16 for the soaps to harden, during which time
02:19 any residual odour from the used cooking oil
02:22 will have dissipated.
02:25 The finished product can be used for everyday
02:28 sanitary purposes at home, such as washing clothes
02:32 or cleaning kitchen utensils.
02:35 We are not making any profit from this class or this workshop.
02:40 If they want to learn how to make this soap,
02:44 they have to pay about RM60.
02:46 But for the committee, we only charge about RM15
02:50 just to cover all the materials.
02:54 So if you or your family members are keen on learning
02:57 the ropes of soap making, sign up for GWS' workshops
03:01 and do your part to help the environment.
