00:00 "And Barbie is on a plastic doll with big boobies."
00:03 Greta Gerwig is weighing in on Joe Coy's Barbie joke at the Golden Globes,
00:09 which many called sexist. While appearing on BBC Radio 4 Today,
00:13 the writer and director addressed the quip Coy delivered during his first Globes hosting gig.
00:18 The joke has been criticized by some for being reductive or sexist, and some Globes viewers
00:23 noticed that the audience wasn't necessarily laughing either. But Gerwig offered a different
00:27 take on Coy's joke. "Well, he's not wrong. She's the first doll that was mass-produced with breasts,
00:32 so he was right on. And you know, I think that so much of the project of the movie was unlikely
00:37 because it is about a plastic doll." Gerwig went on to add that Barbie, a toy her own mother was
00:42 hesitant about her playing with when she was young, "by her very construction has no character,
00:47 no story. She's there to be projected upon." The Oscar-nominated filmmaker added that
00:51 throughout Barbie's history, which began in 1959, "she has been at points ahead of
00:56 and behind the culture. She's been a villain and she's been a hero, but it felt like in a way,
01:01 even though it's so seemingly superficial, that it was such a rich place to start."
01:05 Gerwig is among a growing number of voices who have weighed in on Coy's controversial jokes.
01:10 "On the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift. I swear,
01:15 it was just more to go to." On Tuesday, both Steve Martin and Whoopi Goldberg,
01:20 as two actor-comedians themselves, acknowledged the difficulty of the job.
01:24 "I don't know whether it was the room, I don't know whether it was the jokes,
01:28 I didn't get to see it. But I do know that he is as good as it gets."
01:33 Martin wrote, "Congratulations to Joe Coy, who took on the toughest gig in show business,
01:37 hit, missed, was light on his feet, and now has 20 minutes of new material for his stand-up."
