Well 2024 is expected to be a busy year for athletes aiming to participate in the Paris Olympics set to begin on July 26th. National Swimmer Nikoli Blackman is hoping to make his debut at the big stage. He listed a few meets in the United States that he will be challenging in his build up towards qualification.
Transcript
00:00 In terms of college meet, as of right now, next month, the first weekend in January,
00:08 I have an inter-squad meet, so we race against each other.
00:13 The weekend after that, I have TTYR Pro Series, where everybody from America comes and we
00:18 swim against each other.
00:21 The weekend after that, I have a dual meet against Georgia, another D1 school.
00:27 And then the last week in January, I have another dual meet against LSU.
00:33 Swimmer Nikolai Blackmon will be hoping that these meets raise his standard in the sport
00:38 while he attends the University of Tennessee.
00:40 So what else can he do to raise his game?
00:43 Swimming in open water helps improve your performance, doesn't it, Poole?
00:48 I think it would because when you're swimming in open water, you also get waves and stuff
00:55 from the ocean, and that kind of knocks you around.
00:58 So it should help you in a calm setting like a pool, but you'll also have waves from other
01:03 people coming into your lane and stuff like that.
01:06 As he fine-tunes his training, his father believes he will do well to evaluate the role
01:11 of open water swimming in making him a better swimmer.
01:15 Of course, you have the 50, you have the 100, you have the 200, you know.
01:20 But of course, when it's the Gwameleon Olympics, you have to see where there's a mission box
01:24 that you check it into.
01:25 Because again, time is of the essence, and it's what you can take on board.
01:31 And they will find that his body type is obviously changing, so some things are coming easier,
01:38 and some things will come a little harder than what it is.
01:42 Dropping seconds towards Olympic qualification is all that matters, and Blackmon is seeing
01:47 growth.
01:48 Yeah, I can see myself going to another level, because going into this school, they realized
01:53 that I needed to fix some things based on my stroke and my flip turns and how I start
02:00 off the blocks.
02:01 And I've been working on it for the past four months so far, and I can see some improvements
02:07 coming along right now.
02:09 Only time will tell how his tide turns.
