00:00 It's a resounding call for peace in Gaza, echoing in the UN General Assembly.
00:05 On Tuesday, delegates voted overwhelmingly in favour of an immediate ceasefire in the
00:10 Strip, with 153 voting for, 23 abstaining and 10 against, including the United States,
00:18 for the second time since vetoing a similar resolution in the Security Council.
00:23 Today was a historic day in terms of the powerful message that was sent from the General Assembly
00:30 and it is our collective duty to continue in this path until we see an end to this aggression
00:37 against our people, to see this war stopping against our people.
00:42 In response to a Hamas attack on October 7th which resulted in the death of 1,200 Israelis
00:48 and the kidnapping of more than 200 others, Israel launched a total siege of the enclave.
00:54 Its armed forces destroyed hospitals, homes and schools, displaced 80% of the 2.3 million
01:00 Palestinians living in Gaza and according to the Gaza Health Ministry, killed over 18,000
01:06 people, the majority of them women and children.
01:10 Right now what we are seeing is an onslaught on civilians, the breakdown of humanitarian
01:19 systems and profound disrespect for both international law and international humanitarian law.
01:31 Unlike Security Council resolutions, General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding,
01:37 but the Assembly's messages are important barometers of world opinion.
01:41 Prior to Tuesday's vote, the Israeli ambassador accused the UN of ignoring the massacres committed
01:46 by Hamas, calling the body a moral stain on humanity.
