Cambodian woman, son plead not guilty to making racist remarks against Malays

The owner of a bulk sewing company, Mariyah Holdings Sdn Bhd, Mariyah Yaakob pleaded not guilty at the Ayer Keroh Sessions Court on Thursday (Dec 7) to a charge of making racist remarks against the Malay community.  The Cambodian woman, 47, made the plea after the charge against her was read before Judge Mohd Sabri Ismail. 00:26 She was charged under Section 505 of the Penal Code, which provides a maximum jail term of

00:32 two years or a fine or both, upon conviction.

00:35 Meanwhile, her 22-year-old son, Ezwan Hafsham Mohamed Hisham, who is the company director,

00:42 claimed trial to a charge of knowingly using his mother's TikTok account to create and

00:48 initiate the transmission of a video that featured a woman saying something offensive.

00:53 He was charged with committing the offence with the intent to hurt the feelings of others,

00:58 and the video was viewed on the same date, time and location.

01:03 The offence was framed under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act,

01:10 1998.

01:12 If convicted, the offender could be fined not more than 50,000 ringgit or imprisoned

01:17 for up to one year or both.

01:19 The court allowed bail at 15,000 ringgit and 10,000 ringgit for Maria and Ezwan respectively.

01:26 Both mother and son were ordered to surrender their passports to the court and refrain from

01:30 making any statements to any parties for fear of disrupting the proceedings.

01:35 The court fixed January 12 for mention and handing over of documents.
