00:00A 23-year-old e-hailing driver appeared in the Kuching Magistrate's Court on Tuesday

00:05to face charges for the murder of Nurul Asikin Lan, whose decomposed body was discovered

00:10in a ditch at Tabuan Jaya.

00:13The accused, Zakwan Mokhtar, nodded after the charge was read out before Magistrate

00:17Sharifa Fatima Azura Wan Ali.

00:20No plea was recorded as the case is under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

00:25The next mention date was fixed on February 10.

00:28According to court documents, Zakwan allegedly caused the death of 28-year-old Nurul Asikin

00:35on December 6.

00:36Her body was later found in a drain along Jalan Setia Raja at approximately 9.10pm on

00:43December 14.

00:44The charge, filed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, carries the death sentence or

00:50imprisonment between 30 to 40 years and whipping upon conviction.

00:55Deputy Public Prosecutor Jinxiao Chenghui represented the prosecution, while Zakwan

01:01appeared without legal representation.

01:05In a separate hearing before Magistrate Ling Huichuan, Zakwan pleaded guilty to providing

01:10false information about the case to police.

01:13This offence was committed at the Central Police Station in Kuala Lumpur at 8.53pm on

01:20December 10.

01:22For this charge, filed under Section 182 of the Penal Code, he received a three-month

01:28jail sentence, effective immediately.

01:31The offence typically carries a maximum penalty of six months' imprisonment, or a fine up

01:38to 2000 ringgit, or both.

01:41It was reported that the man behind the murder of Nurul Asikin had confessed that he killed

01:46her because he needed money to pay for his way to watch a football match between Malaysia

01:52and Cambodia.

01:53The match, part of the Mitsubishi Electric ASEAN 2024 Cup, took place in Phnom Penh

02:00on December 8.

02:01The suspect also revealed where he disposed of the victim's body.
