Tomorrow is GivingTuesday, a day to support generosity, charity and philanthropy. The director of the U.S. and Canada hub, Celeste Flores, explains how it works and how others can get involved.
Transcript
00:00 Today's Monday, tomorrow's Tuesday.
00:01 Tomorrow's-- but it's not just any Tuesday.
00:03 It is Giving Tuesday.
00:05 It's a day to support generosity, charity,
00:07 and philanthropy.
00:09 So far, more than $10 billion have been raised and donated
00:14 globally in the 11 years since it began.
00:17 That is so cool.
00:18 And Celeste Flores leads Giving Tuesday in the US and Canada.
00:22 What an honor.
00:23 She's here with us this morning.
00:25 Celeste, good morning.
00:26 Thanks for being here.
00:28 Oh, thanks for having me.
00:29 I just am lucky to be with you guys this morning.
00:32 And I feel like I want 10 cups of coffee, too.
00:35 Well, join the club.
00:36 Love it.
00:37 Giving Tuesday Eve.
00:38 Yes.
00:39 Oh, I love that.
00:40 Giving Tuesday Eve.
00:41 Oh my gosh.
00:42 I got to start putting that down on the calendar, right?
00:44 Well, can you tell us, for everyone
00:45 who is new to Giving Tuesday, perhaps, how it works
00:49 and how people can get involved?
00:51 Well, I guess the number one thing is for everyone.
00:55 Giving Tuesday was intended and built just as a day
00:58 to do good about 12 years ago.
01:01 Can't believe it's that long.
01:02 But it really is a day intended to do good.
01:05 Yes, a lot of money is raised.
01:06 Nonprofits raise a lot of money in that time.
01:08 But it really is to honor.
01:10 Everybody has something to give.
01:11 And everyone has an ability to receive generosity.
01:14 And on this day, honor it in a way that is meaningful to you.
01:18 And so our website has lots of ideas, if you don't know how.
01:21 But you'll see pictures of people doing drives,
01:24 just doing love notes to their neighbors, dropping off meals,
01:28 donating to your favorite organization,
01:30 volunteering at your favorite organization,
01:33 learning about a new organization.
01:35 There's so many ways to celebrate
01:37 what is Giving Tuesday.
01:40 And while it's a global effort, it
01:43 seems like it is also done locally,
01:45 that it's done in local groups.
01:47 How is that all coordinated?
01:50 It is.
01:50 It's beautiful tapestry.
01:52 It is, as I said, Giving Tuesday was started in the US
01:56 and in New York.
01:57 However, almost 100 countries have
02:00 taken the Giving Tuesday movement
02:03 and taken it to their countries and rooted the activations
02:07 and activities in the local cultures
02:09 and the giving traditions in those countries
02:12 to increase more generosity.
02:14 It's really about the spirit of giving and our shared humanity
02:17 and taking care of one another.
02:19 So while it is a day that we celebrate
02:21 with all sorts of acts of generosity, at the core,
02:24 it's about increasing generous behaviors.
02:27 And that's when systems change and when processes change
02:30 and we build a better community.
02:32 But it's at the country level.
02:33 And then there's people in local communities
02:35 doing these activations and these activities
02:40 for the whole community to engage.
02:42 If you don't know what to do, there's
02:44 a lot of community leaders-- we call them hand raisers--
02:46 in their community in all these countries,
02:49 especially in the US, that are uplifting an activity
02:53 for Giving Tuesday around this time.
02:55 You are really putting us in the good feels this morning.
02:58 I absolutely love this.
02:59 And this is something we talk about a lot at AccuWeather.
03:01 We see a lot of weather disasters.
03:03 It's the downside of working in this industry.
03:05 We see a lot of people with a lot of need.
03:07 Are there any groups that you know about who maybe
03:09 are directing their efforts toward victims
03:11 of weather disasters, maybe something
03:13 people can be a part of?
03:15 Well, that's the thing with generosity, right?
03:18 This is what you uplift when times are really hard.
03:21 And the times are really hard right now.
03:23 I mean, they always are.
03:24 And globally, it's a really hard time.
03:27 So what you can do when things seem so large,
03:30 when you feel like there's not anything
03:32 you could do as a single person, it
03:34 is about being generous and giving.
03:35 And yes, while there are natural disasters that are actually
03:39 happening globally--
03:40 for example, Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico
03:43 and the floods in Pakistan--
03:45 the leaders in those communities actually
03:47 uplifted a Giving Tuesday effort using that generosity spirit
03:51 to garner more support and more really just awareness
03:58 of what's happening, what the needs are.
04:00 So as far as needs for disasters,
04:03 any disaster that might be happening or has happened
04:05 in your community within the last year or so,
04:08 recovery is a long process.
04:10 And so there's lots of ideas on our website.
04:13 But there's also maps on our website
04:16 that show you what might be happening
04:18 in your local community.
04:20 But if you've had a disaster close to your area
04:24 or maybe from a home country or where relatives live,
04:27 not only just immediate, but maybe think of long-term,
04:31 maybe something that happened within the year,
04:33 there's still a great need.
04:34 And so yes, there's lots of groups
04:37 who may have had a natural disaster happen
04:40 within the year that might be still working on those efforts.
04:44 And Celeste, we have about 30 seconds here.
04:46 Really quickly, what are some of the trends
04:49 in giving this year?
04:51 A lot of storytelling.
04:52 People telling their stories about giving.
04:54 And it doesn't have to be big.
04:56 The word philanthropist is a small P, meaning anyone
04:59 and everyone can be a giver.
05:01 And so it's people telling their stories
05:02 to inspire others to give.
05:04 And that's what increases generosity.
05:05 But it's also in-person events are coming back.
05:08 So like I said, get on our line.
05:10 See if there's an in-person event happening
05:12 in your community.
05:13 If not, maybe next year you're the one
05:15 ready to take on the lead and be a hand raiser
05:18 and plan that for your community.
05:20 But most importantly, if you don't know where to start,
05:22 go to givingtuesday.org.
05:23 Lots of ideas for you and your family and your community.
05:27 But also maybe to tell you what's
05:28 happening maybe in person in your neighborhood
05:32 or in your community.
05:33 But yeah, storytelling and in-person
05:35 and just keeping it human.
05:37 That's really the big things that we're seeing this year.
05:42 Absolutely love it.
05:43 Celeste Flores, Director of the US and Canada

05:47 Thank you so much for being here this morning
05:49 during such a busy time.
05:50 We always appreciate it.
05:52 Thank you so much for having me.
