00:00 But the social contract is not justice. It is racial discrimination, it is racial bias.
00:07 So I think I am very angry.
00:10 23-year-old M. Navin has spoken against using the social contract to justify university entry quotas,
00:18 saying this was not justice but discrimination.
00:22 The recipient of the Royal Education Award said he could not accept arguments
00:26 that university quotas should be retained because of the social contract,
00:30 referring to the so-called trade-off between the majority and minority ethnic populations of the country.
00:36 I think the PRK is one of the biggest supporters of the Bakatan Harapan party
00:42 because I believe they want to bring justice to everyone, without considering religion, nation and anything else.
00:50 But when Anwar, who represents the Bakatan Harapan, becomes our Prime Minister,
00:58 and when he is questioned like that, and he answers with a social contract, I think that is not fair.
01:11 Navin was referring to Anwar's exchange in August with an Indian student
01:15 over whether he would scrap the quota system for university entries.
01:19 Then, the Prime Minister said abolishing the system would lead to turmoil in Malaysia's history
01:25 and social contract must be taken into account in the discourse on the Bumibutra quota.
01:31 In his recent speech at the Royal Education Award ceremony,
01:34 Navin talked about how the quota system prevented a late friend of his from entering university.
01:40 We have almost the same qualifications, except for one additional A.
01:46 I was accepted into the matriculation programme, whereas my friend was not.
01:50 He felt defeated, and thought that this was the end of his life.
01:55 He started to feel lonely and depressed because he believed that he was not good enough.
02:02 When I entered the matriculation programme, I was surprised
02:05 because there were students who had not only the same achievements as him, but even lower than him.
02:11 Ladies and gentlemen,
02:14 my friend is now here.
02:17 The doctoral student at University Science Malaysia said the quota system should be gradually reduced
02:23 to make way for merit-based admission, and that he believed the lack of meritocracy
02:28 was the main reason for a lack of quality in Malaysia's education system.
02:32 The use of the quota system, people who have talent, passion and capability,
02:42 they cannot enter. What I want is fair education.
02:46 If a student gets an A, I think he is in with a good curriculum scores,
02:53 I think he should be given matriculation or whatever foundation he wants.
