00:00 After several days of record rainfall in South Florida, many folks are getting up
00:05 and out today without power and damage. Now about a hundred thousand people here
00:11 in South Florida are without power as of early this morning. About 65,000 in
00:16 Miami-Dade County and just under 25,000 in Broward County. But it's the winds
00:21 that are the story today. The winds are expected to stay as high as 40 to 50
00:26 miles an hour throughout the afternoon. And as you can see over my shoulder
00:29 there was some damage here along Miami Beach. Now several areas are cleaning up
00:34 today with trees and palm fronds strewn across the busy streets here along South
00:40 Beach and along Miami Beach. They are also dealing with some spotty power
00:44 allergies that I mentioned. There's also been some problems with some trees that
00:48 are downed in the area that's causing some traffic headaches for folks trying
00:52 to get out and about. Now school is open here in the Miami-Dade area but closed
00:57 in Broward County. The schools in the Florida Keys and Monroe County are also
01:03 open. But for folks that have come down for an early holiday this caught many of
01:08 them off guard.
01:10 What did you think of that wind and rain last night?
01:23 I thought this was exceptional. In Miami it usually rains for short periods of time.
01:28 But it was just incredibly wet yesterday. So we had to stay in the hotel room.
01:33 And just try to keep dry.
01:35 Now the weather is expected to dramatically improve as we head through
01:40 the next 24 to 48 hours as that low pressure pulls away from South Florida.
01:44 However there will be residual effects. There is dangerous surf conditions along
01:49 all of the Atlantic in the state of Florida along the east side that is
01:52 expected to stay for the next several days. And of course record rains cause
01:56 quite a bit of headache. There have been reports of some damaged homes in the
02:00 area as well as several folks trying to get their homes restored with that power
02:05 which will take at least several more hours according to the local power crews.
02:08 For now we are reporting in Miami-Dade County. I'm Leslie Hudson for AccuWeather.
