00:03 - Okay, well, the NCAA has had their own issues.
00:05 They had the issues in the off season
00:06 with the baseball scandal with Iowa, Iowa State.
00:09 Some new rule changes, Mike, are now involved
00:12 in terms of penalties with sports betting.
00:14 What are they?
00:15 - Yeah, so there was gonna be a question
00:18 of whether Noah Shannon, he was kind of the athlete
00:20 everybody looked at at Iowa.
00:21 He had bet, I believe, on the Iowa women's basketball team
00:24 when they were making their NCAA tournament run last year.
00:26 So he didn't bet on Iowa football,
00:28 but he was caught, obviously, in terms of that huge
00:31 betting probe, having bet on a Iowa team.
00:34 Wasn't charged in that case, and ended up that,
00:38 a couple weeks ago, maybe, would've been eligible
00:40 to come back based on the projected rules that were out.
00:43 If you bet on a team, you play for that school,
00:45 bet on a team that's not your team,
00:47 you were gonna just get an education for the first offense.
00:50 He would've been able to come back.
00:51 But they ended up delaying that rule conversation,
00:55 I guess, so to speak, with the proposal.
00:57 And now they said, "Well, if you do this,
00:58 "you're out for the year."
01:00 So if you bet on your team, you play for the football team,
01:02 you bet on women's basketball and men's basketball,
01:04 and you're caught, you're out for a year.
01:06 You lose a season eligibility.
01:08 So he lost all of his eligibility, he was a senior,
01:10 so unfortunately, his career's over.
01:12 He's the test case.
01:13 Again, we say this, Craig, all the time.
01:15 You're an athlete, don't have these apps, really.
01:18 You wanna check 'em, go on ESPN.com, see the odds,
01:21 but probably shouldn't have a betting app,
01:23 because it's just gonna get you in trouble.
01:24 If you think your friend can grab your phone,
01:28 but it's in your name, you're gonna get caught.
01:30 So yeah, unfortunate for Noah Shannon.
01:32 I think there was another Iowa athlete as well.
01:34 But if you bet on one of your teams,
01:37 the school you play for,
01:38 you're gonna lose a season, at least.
01:41 So again, whether you're a reporter or a college athlete,
01:45 maybe download the app, but don't deposit any money.
01:47 Don't be betting, just save yourself the trouble.
01:49 Enjoy playing the sport you love or the job you love,
01:52 and don't get yourself caught up in all this stuff.
