00:02 - I know where Bob Knight is on the Scott Farrell chart,
00:09 and he's all the way at the top.
00:13 And honest to God, condolences to you.
00:15 And you were obviously the first person I thought of
00:17 when I heard that last night.
00:19 He had passed away.
00:20 Now, look, I think we could be here the entire three hours
00:25 if we tried to play even like all the great Bob Knight stuff
00:30 that we probably could.
00:31 I did find something, it was a little bit over a minute,
00:34 some of the really good ones.
00:36 So let me throw you this little Bob Knight montage
00:38 for you here to get you going on C2C today.
00:41 - To refer to this whole thing from start to finish
00:45 as a real Mickey Mouse operation.
00:47 But that'd be an insult to Mickey Mouse.
00:51 - But the greatest motivator of all is your ass on a bench.
00:55 There is no better motivator.
00:58 Ass meets bench, bench retains ass.
01:04 Ass transmits signal to brain,
01:10 brain transmits signal to body,
01:14 body gets ass off bench and plays better.
01:17 I mean, it's a hell of a sequence of things
01:19 that takes place.
01:20 (audience laughing)
01:22 - Excellent free throw shooter will have the honor
01:24 of shooting the technicals.
01:25 Look at here, look at here.
01:27 Bobby Knight just threw his chair
01:29 clear across the free throw lane.
01:32 - That was there.
01:33 - When my time on earth is gone
01:40 and my activities here are past,
01:42 I want they bury me upside down
01:45 and my critics can kiss my ass.
01:48 (audience laughing)
01:51 - I mean, there was no one like him.
01:54 I can tell you,
01:55 I had no reason in the world for that guy to like me.
02:02 My nickname for 42 years was Ass Hat
02:05 and you can figure out what that means.
02:07 One day, I was sitting on the stairs
02:12 leading down to assembly hall, the floor for practice.
02:15 And he said, "What the F are you doing here, Ass Hat?"
02:20 And I said, "I'm just getting ready for practice coach."
02:23 He goes, "Get the F out of here."
02:25 And then I got up to walk away and he goes,
02:27 "I'm just kidding, Ass Hat."
02:29 That's special, like one-on-one,
02:33 no one else in the hallway and him yelling at me.
02:35 Secondly, being at 87 when Smart hit the shot in New Orleans
02:39 and jumping up and down on the floor with him
02:42 and then going into the room with him
02:43 and jumping up and down for another hour
02:46 and getting hugged by Bob Knight.
02:50 And then I'd say another memory was when he called my show
02:54 on Howard Stern and said,
02:56 "I can't believe someone would F and marry you, Ass Hat.
03:01 I can't believe you have kids, Ass Hat.
03:04 I always thought you were kind of smart though."
03:07 And then he hung up on me.
03:09 Those are the memories, the friendship with Digger Phelps
03:14 that was elevated my relationship with him.
03:18 And when I saw what he did for Landon Turner,
03:22 bought him a house for when he was paralyzed,
03:25 what I saw him do for Fred Taylor, his coach,
03:29 who became homeless and broke and he bought him a house
03:32 and paid all his bills till he was dead.
03:34 All I hear is how he was crazy, crazy like a fox.
03:41 I know he was the smartest, most learned,
03:44 most educated, brilliant person I ever met.
03:49 He hunted and fished and golfed.
03:53 I saw him hit a golf ball 300 yards.
03:56 He was the most intimidating person I ever met.
03:59 Six, six, 300 pounds, he meant business.
04:03 When he started yelling, the whole room shut up.
04:06 I've never seen anyone even come close,
04:09 not even close to handling the media the way that guy did.
04:13 No one's ever gonna touch him.
04:15 He ran it, he is the master.
