00:00 It's a huge day for Year 12 students here in NSW with the first HSC exam being sat this
00:07 morning. It was the English exam, one of the only fully compulsory courses for NSW Year
00:14 12 students. Also on today, a few other language elective courses including Hebrew and Japanese
00:20 due to be sat this afternoon. Now the English topic for the Class of 2023 has been texts
00:25 and human experiences with their main essay question asking them to unpack a book or a
00:30 play that they've been studying all year. For the students here at Bishop Tyrell Anglican
00:35 College at Fletcher near Newcastle, they were feeling pretty good after the exam wrapped
00:39 up considering the stress of the exam period. Going in I was like, okay I'm a bit nervous
00:45 but I was just going to do as best I could. So we had short answer questions first with
00:51 excerpts we had to read and then an essay question and I really enjoyed the short answer
00:56 one. Good to get it out of the way, you know, just sort of start, get the ball rolling.
01:00 Yes, I've got early entry into Newcastle Uni which is very exciting. For a lot of students
01:05 here in NSW, the HSC isn't the be all and end all that it once was. A lot of universities,
01:11 the local one here in Newcastle as well as others from further afield, are offering more
01:16 and more early entry places for students and letting them pretty well have a solid university
01:21 option before they get their ATAR. So for students here, that's a couple that we spoke
01:26 to had already gotten offers into university but that hasn't distracted them from the job
01:30 ahead. The second compulsory English exam is tomorrow as well as their elective courses
01:35 to be sat for the rest of the month.
