00:11On Sunday, the old Fremantle bridge will close for a year
00:15to build the new and improved version.
00:18This is one of the biggest and most complex projects I've worked on
00:21just in terms of the actual construction methodology,
00:25in terms of the design, in terms of the length of planning,
00:28in terms of the engagement with community and stakeholders.
00:31The government has introduced a number of measures
00:34to try ease traffic congestion,
00:36including allowing bikes on trains during peak hour.
00:40People will still be able to access businesses throughout the area.
00:43There's a lot of alternate routes.
00:45We've been planning this for a long time.
00:47Queen Victoria Street in North Fremantle
00:49will be cut off from its usual traffic flow
00:52and businesses are worried.

00:56We rely on people using this road to come through on their way to work
01:00during peak hour for their coffees in the morning.
01:02A lot of people are waiting to see what happens
01:04before they can even make a decision
01:06on whether or not they're going to be able to come through.
01:08The street has a group chat to band together
01:11during the next 12 months
01:13and remind the public they're still open.
01:16Queen Victoria Street, this sort of little pocket in North Fremantle,
01:19marketing it as somewhere people can still come
01:23and making sure that the sort of general population knows
01:27that we're all still open, all still serving.
01:29The old bridge has been in operation since 1939
01:33and for some its demolition is a momentous occasion.
01:37This weekend, the community will have the chance to cross it
01:41for one last time.
