Speaking to reporters in Ankeny, Iowa, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) spoke about a range of issues, including the surprise Hamas attacks on Israel.
Transcript
00:00 Well, I just want to say again that we stand with the state of Israel.
00:06 They came under a brutal terrorist attack at the hands of Iranian-backed Hamas terrorists.
00:12 Iran is already celebrating that.
00:14 Of course, Iran funds Hamas.
00:17 The Biden administration has made that a lot easier by being weak on sanctions and even
00:21 doing $6 billion.
00:23 Israel has every right to defend itself, and they should really do what it takes to root
00:27 out Hamas once and for all.
00:30 I think that typically these things happen.
00:33 Israel starts to respond.
00:34 The media gets upset at them.
00:36 But this was really, really -- and who knows how many people ultimately are going to end
00:41 up being killed on that.
00:43 But already what's reported, the proportion of Israel of that would be the equivalent
00:47 of like over 1,000 people being killed in the United States in a terrorist attack.
00:51 We would never sit idly by on that.
00:54 Second thing, I have in Iowa today a bunch of my former staff from governor, Congress,
01:03 that have paid their own way to come all the way up to Iowa to be able to go knock on people's
01:09 doors and to tell them why they think their former boss should be the next president of
01:17 the United States.
01:18 And I think it's something that is positive in the sense that not every candidate has
01:24 that, obviously.
01:26 We've got people that are motivated to do it.
01:29 And I think it's going to be meaningful and impactful for a lot of these people as they
01:33 see these folks from Florida show up on their front door.
01:36 And for those of you who are Iowans, this is way colder than we usually have the first
01:42 week of October.
01:43 We're still in hurricane season, for Pete's sake, in Florida.
01:46 So you got anything?
01:47 Yeah.
01:48 So Iowa's legislator just passed a new fetal heartbeat bill again, and he takes it to the
01:49 Supreme Court.
01:50 What action do you think is necessary to protect the right to life?
01:51 And do you think a federal ban would impede on state rights?
02:01 I disagree with former President Trump, who attacked heartbeat legislation as, quote,
02:06 "a terrible thing."
02:08 I think that protections for life are positive.
02:11 I've said from the beginning, I think that's bottom up.
02:14 I think local and state are going to be where the money is on that.
02:18 But I think Governor Reynolds and the legislature really were commendable.
02:23 And I think the fact that Donald Trump is attacking them and what they did, I think
02:28 it's just wrong.
02:29 Governor, speaking about law enforcement earlier, you had mentioned red states and people from
02:32 blue cities.
02:33 Secondly, can you elaborate more on that?
02:36 And secondly, can you tell us if what you've done in Florida for law enforcement, enticing
02:41 them to give them bonuses, can that be done at a federal level?
02:44 Well, a couple of things.
02:45 So I think there's a -- because you actually have red states that have some of these crazy
02:50 cities and they go haywire.
02:54 And then you have blue states that have red jurisdictions that do fine.
02:59 Everyone has a right to live in a society in which the rule of law prevails.
03:03 I think it's the Republican form of government clause in the Constitution, I think, gives
03:07 the federal government the ability to ensure that.
03:10 We're going to use the Department of Justice to go after some of these rogue prosecutors
03:14 who are causing people to die by not enforcing the law.
03:19 I mean, you see some of the worst crimes happen, and then they go back and they say, oh, they
03:23 were arrested 12 times and nobody ever held them accountable.
03:26 They just put them right back on the street.
03:27 So we're going to be very aggressive on that.
03:30 We understand how important it is.
03:32 And look, some of these cities that are doing so poorly, it's not like these are big vote
03:37 areas for Republicans, right?
03:39 Baltimore, Philadelphia.
03:41 But you can't have a successful country if every major city in this country is crumbling
03:47 because of high crime.
03:49 And the thing is, this is shooting ourselves in the foot by allowing that to happen.
03:54 This didn't just happen.
03:55 This is a direct result of the bad policy.
03:57 What's the situation like today in Israel?
04:00 If Israelis were to ask for U.S. troops to help, is that something they would want?
04:05 They've never asked for that.
04:06 I think that the good thing about Israel is we've given them aid over the years, but honestly,
04:12 we've done a lot more with other countries just recently.
04:15 They want to fight their own fights.
04:17 I think it's important for us to stand with them, to let the world know we stand with
04:21 them, and to back them when they're taking action.
04:25 So I don't anticipate that that would be necessary.
04:28 But clearly, they are our strongest ally in the Middle East.
04:32 They work very hard to be able to protect their people because they're in a dangerous
04:35 neighborhood and they've known they've had to do this for a number of years.
04:39 What's the Biden administration's response to this situation?
04:43 Has he made a statement yet, the president?
04:45 Because I came here, he had not said anything, and this started happening.
04:49 So he has put out something.
04:50 Because I saw a national security advisor or somebody.
04:53 But okay, so he has.
04:55 Look, he needs to speak.
04:57 This is a time for moral clarity.
04:58 This is a time for the president of the United States to say unequivocally, we stand with
05:03 the people of Israel.
05:05 We stand with Prime Minister Netanyahu, who I know he doesn't always get along with, and
05:09 say, you cannot have terrorists raining down rockets on your civilian population, going
05:16 into these communities and killing people in hand-to-hand situations.
05:21 That is totally unacceptable.
05:23 And so we've got to be very clear on that as Americans.
05:26 And he needs to make sure that he is doing moral clarity.
05:29 I thought that there was a statement came out from one of the State Department bureaucracies
05:34 locally there saying, don't respond with anything.
05:37 That's absurd.
05:38 When you have Hamas terrorists, Iranian-funded militants, the only thing they are going to
05:43 respond to is lethal force.
05:46 We'll see you at the next stop.
05:47 Thank you, guys.
05:48 Thank you, guys.
05:49 Thank you.
05:49 [applause]
