00:00 (thunder)
00:02 - Drivers meeting!
00:16 Good morning, welcome to the first road day
00:18 of Ultimate Adventure, yay!
00:19 (cheering)
00:21 We got 700 some miles to go today.
00:25 You are carrying your canoes today for a reason.
00:27 See that sky, it's blue.
00:30 We do not expect rain for the most part today.
00:33 Leaving in 15 minutes, let's go!
00:36 (radio chatter)
00:41 Keep the guy behind you in sight.
00:46 Really important.
00:49 Not only that, you wanna stay fairly close.
00:51 You don't wanna be on everybody's bumpers.
00:53 You gotta be able to stop should something occur.
00:55 So you don't wanna get this thing strung out
00:57 for a mile and a half.
00:58 Road days aren't just traveling the back roads and highways.
01:06 That's why we stopped at Clay Valley Dirt Park
01:08 for a new wheeling adventure.
01:09 Morning, my name's Ralph Painter.
01:18 We're at Clay Valley Dirt Park in Roseville, Ohio.
01:21 Today we're hosting our second Ultimate Adventure 2015.
01:25 Drivers meeting, let's go!
01:28 Welcome to Clay Valley Dirt Park.
01:33 (cheering)
01:35 You had no idea you were coming here, did you?
01:39 You have no idea where you are either, right?
01:41 Okay.
01:42 - We're in the US of A.
01:43 - In Roseville, Ohio.
01:45 Okay, so this park is operated by Ralph Painter
01:49 and his wife, Danette.
01:51 (cheering)
01:53 Welcome back.
01:54 We have 211 acres here.
01:56 We have almost 10 miles of trails in one year.
01:59 This is only the second year for this park.
02:01 We got the pond trail.
02:03 We've got a spoilage hill with a bunch of hardcore stuff.
02:06 We have a lot of stock modified off-camber.
02:08 We got a lot of good trails today.
02:09 We're gonna have a good time.
02:11 Beautiful day to wheel.
02:17 Oh yeah.
02:18 We're here at Clay Valley Dirt Park
02:24 on the third day of Ultimate Adventure.
02:25 On the pond trail.
02:28 Got some great tight stuff.
02:29 There's this tiny little ridge and these wooden guardrails
02:32 and the full sizes have to squeeze between trees
02:35 and then they have to almost keep themselves
02:38 from going off the edge.
02:39 That's the wooden guardrails.
02:41 It's not a big drop, but it'd do some damage.
02:44 We got a great vantage point here.
02:45 Watching these vehicles on the ridge,
02:48 on the pond trail, looking across the pond.
02:51 We actually just had to move the guy over
02:58 so we can get him straight and not destroy his truck.
03:01 Woo!
03:11 (metal scraping)
03:14 It was a little tight.
03:19 We got ourselves a little dent,
03:21 but I think we're gonna do a little trail repair if we can.
03:25 Like new.
03:28 (engine revving)
03:33 (metal scraping)
03:36 What's the name of this trail?
03:43 We haven't named it yet.
03:44 It's gonna be the Ultimate Adventure Trail
03:46 because we're the first to do it.
03:48 Ralph and his crew were kind enough to clear the way.
03:50 Steven and James Watson of Offroad Design
03:55 hit the newly named hill in their '85 Chevy K30.
04:01 That was pretty fun.
04:03 I thought I'd try crawling it,
04:04 but I should know better.
04:05 Every time we come back east and we try to crawl something,
04:08 you end up backing down the hill,
04:09 shifting up a gear, and just going for it.
04:12 But by that time, I'd already kind of wallowed it out.
04:14 So we'll see what 40-inch holes look like
04:16 for the rest of these guys.
04:18 Rob Peterson of Synergy Manufacturing
04:24 attacks the hill from the right side of his postal jeep,
04:26 since that's where the steering wheel is.
04:29 (engine revving)
04:31 Old crony Chris Durham tries a new line
04:46 in his borrowed Land Cruiser.
04:48 Chris Durham breaking ground on a new trail.
04:56 (engine revving)
04:58 (engine revving)
05:01 (cheering)
05:14 (bell ringing)
05:28 - That was an absolute ride.
05:30 Being on the downhill side of that was interesting.
05:33 - That's how it's done, man.
05:34 Just get into it.
05:35 (laughing)
05:37 - On the front, you got a rock that you have to crawl up,
05:49 except it's already grabbing your knuckle,
05:51 your joints and steering.
05:53 So you might want to try a little bit more rear
05:55 with some right steer and see what happens.
05:58 (engine revving)
06:01 We barely scratched the surface of Clay Valley Dirt Park,
06:15 but it's still 500 miles to go down the road
06:17 before we hit our first camp.
06:18 With tires aired up and canoes reloaded,
06:22 we headed on down the road
06:23 towards the thunderstorms and the tornadoes.
06:26 Radar indicates severe tornado on the ground
06:29 located near Hillsboro.
06:31 It says take precaution now.
06:33 No joke, gentlemen.
06:34 Moving southeast at 15 miles per hour.
06:37 We keep headed.
06:38 The way we're headed, we're in better shape.
06:54 We made it by the skin of our teeth.
06:56 Last ferry runs 745.
06:58 We got here 744.49.
07:00 We just went something like three tornadoes,
07:03 five hail storms, a rainstorm,
07:05 and about 237 miles to get here.
07:09 The Augusta Ferry runs across the Ohio River
07:22 from Kentucky to Ohio and back.
07:24 It's one of the oldest ferries in operation on the Ohio,
07:26 starting in 1797.
07:29 If we had missed this ferry,
07:30 we would have had to drive an extra 100 miles
07:32 to get to camp.
07:33 Sam, did you make the turn?
07:42 Yeah, 34.
07:43 We're almost left.
07:45 Road days can be worse on a rig than wheeling days,
07:48 and repairs along the road are inevitable.
07:50 Cooper, what's been happening all night?
07:52 Oh, just battling some issues with some temperature control.
07:57 It's so weird when you try and update a 1975 vehicle
08:02 to 2000 plus technology, you know,
08:05 things get a little quirky.
08:06 And then of course, you throw in the ultimate adventure
08:08 and it goes from quirky to awesome
08:11 to thermostat changes in a parking lot
08:14 that I don't even know what time it is or where we are.
08:17 It has an air filter.
08:18 It has an air fuel gauge in it.
08:21 So I'm from Colorado and we started in Ohio.
08:26 And I just need a different set of jets here in Tennessee,
08:30 Kentucky.
08:33 We're in Kentucky now.
08:35 So I'm going to put in a different set of jets
08:39 to make it run a little richer.
08:43 (upbeat music)
08:46 (upbeat music)
08:49 We finally hit our first camp at two in the morning.
08:58 We usually set up our tents in the dark,
09:00 but not usually when it's this dark.
09:02 (upbeat music)
09:07 Driver speeding!
09:08 Burning daylight!
09:15 (upbeat music)
09:17 I think we burned the darkness last night.
09:21 Well, good morning guys.
09:23 - Morning.
09:23 - We're at our second official trail.
09:26 We're in Black Mountain.
09:28 Anybody know where Black Mountain is?
09:30 - Right here.
09:31 - Right here, up there.
09:32 Also known as Harlan, Kentucky.
09:35 In case you weren't paying attention to your maps
09:37 that you weren't looking at in the middle of the night
09:39 because you were trying to drive and stay awake last night.
09:42 - This morning?
09:43 - This morning, couple hours ago.
09:46 This is an incredible park.
09:47 It's a county park.
09:49 Harlan County, go figure.
09:51 We're going to be led by my friend, Jason Vanover.
09:54 - I'm Jason Vanover.
09:55 We're trail guiding this year for the Ultimate Adventure
09:58 2015 and we're at Harlan,
10:00 Black Mountain Adventure Off-Road Park.
10:03 At Black Mountain, they have approximately 6,000 acres
10:08 with 250 miles of trails.
10:10 We've been staying at the Putney Trailhead
10:12 and here they have basically a full automotive shop
10:15 with plasma cutters, welders, air compressors,
10:19 good bath house and everything for everybody.
10:22 They've been really, really good to us.
10:24 We're going to go hit a few trails
10:25 once y'all come along with us.
10:27 We're not going to be able to hit all 250 miles of trails,
10:29 but we're going to give it a shot so we can get done.
10:32 - Coal, that's why the park is here.
10:35 After the coal was mined out,
10:36 the county turned the area into Black Mountain Off-Road Park.
10:41 On some trails like this, this is the optional line.
10:46 The actual trail goes on the other side of that tree,
10:50 right up where Carter is.
10:52 However, this is a line that you can try.
10:55 Who's going to try this one?
10:57 There you go.
10:58 (engine revving)
11:01 (engine revving)
11:04 - That's great.
11:25 That was a great attempt.
11:26 I'm telling you, Jason gave it all.
11:28 Unfortunately, it's really slick
11:31 and the first guy up usually is going to have the problem.
11:32 That's why he was heating up his tires.
11:34 Just didn't work enough.
11:35 So, three tries, he's out.
11:36 We're going to get the rest.
11:37 We're going to continue up the trail.
11:39 (cheering)
11:41 (laughing)
11:44 (engine revving)
11:46 (engine revving)
11:49 - Three-timer, Vijay Perrin,
12:15 started as a reader on Ultimate Adventure,
12:17 then as a returning reader,
12:18 and this year as the hired gun for our sponsor, Eastwood.
12:21 Cooper Rasmussen from Power Products Unlimited
12:32 brought his 1975 Jeep Cherokee Chief
12:34 from Washington State.
12:35 That actually was valiant effort on Cooper's behalf.
12:43 He's hitting it one more time,
12:45 and if he doesn't break, he's done.
12:46 - Let's winch it.
12:53 He's up there.
12:56 He's already got everything.
12:57 He's right there.
12:57 (engine revving)
13:07 (engine revving)
13:11 (engine revving)
13:14 (engine revving)
13:17 - I felt a little better than I expected it to,
13:42 but I do got a little bit of the wee-billies.
13:45 (laughing)
13:47 Once I got there in the right place,
13:49 it actually felt really good.
13:51 I just bumped up and was surprised to get there,
13:54 so I stayed in it.
13:55 (laughing)
13:58 (engine revving)
14:10 (engine revving)
14:12 - Pull up, pull up here.
14:23 Pull up, pull up.
14:24 - That's three.
14:25 (laughing)
14:28 - And a half.
14:29 - That's three and a half.
14:31 - Take the front off.
14:37 Get some more body.
14:38 - That's three and a half.
14:40 - That's all the skinny man I got.
14:42 Come on, guys.
14:43 (cheering)
14:46 - Thank you, guys.
14:51 - Thank you.
14:52 - When you start going sideways
14:54 and it's not looking good going forward,
14:56 you better pick something else,
14:57 and the only other choice you've got is the back.
14:59 Ram it in and go.
15:00 (engine revving)
15:04 (engine revving)
15:07 (cheering)
15:11 (cheering)
15:26 - How'd that feel?
15:30 - That was fine.
15:31 You know, just another day in the park.
15:33 - Wow, this thing gets it.
15:35 Had to let her eat.
15:37 Get a little pissed off.
15:38 - We're gonna go to Lower Rock Garden now after Rail Bed.
15:44 Max Dallinger is the driver of record for high lift.
15:54 The co-driver, Derek Phelps, took the company TJ up Rail Bed.
15:57 (engine revving)
16:00 (rock music)
16:02 - You know, my spotter was the best spotter I could have.
16:28 I trust him completely.
16:30 So he got me through that rocky trail.
16:35 There was a couple big rocks,
16:37 and we got through just fine.
16:39 (engine revving)
16:43 (cheering)
16:48 (engine revving)
16:51 - Kevin Stearns built the Crawl-O-Ratto
17:02 for sponsor BDS Suspension,
17:04 and he shows it can do more than just crawl.
17:07 (engine revving)
17:12 (rock music)
17:14 - Hard to the side.
17:25 - Woo hoo!
17:30 (engine revving)
17:39 (rock music)
17:41 (engine revving)
17:44 (rock music)
17:46 (engine revving)
17:49 (engine revving)
17:52 (engine revving)
18:10 (rock music)
18:12 - Those Falcon tires hook up.
18:36 (rock music)
18:38 - What's the next trail?
18:44 - Lower Rock Garden.
18:45 - Lower Rock Garden, and that one,
18:47 I'd say everybody could probably at least make it.
18:49 - Yeah.
18:50 - But then we know they're making it on this one too.
18:52 - Yeah.
18:53 It's not as, the grade isn't as steep as this.
18:56 It's a little more technical.
18:57 - More technical rock crawling?
18:58 - Yeah.
18:59 (rock music)
19:02 - Lower Rock Garden is tough,
19:29 and even more so in the rain.
19:30 Now every garden needs water,
19:32 but we need to get out of it before it floods.
19:34 (engine revving)
19:39 (fire crackling)
19:45 (engine revving)
19:49 (rock music)
19:51 (engine revving)
19:54 (engine revving)
20:07 (rock music)
20:11 (engine revving)
20:14 - One of the challenges of Ultimate Adventure,
20:36 every year is we build these awesome project vehicles,
20:40 but then we hardly have any seat time
20:42 before we get them out on the trail.
20:44 This vehicle is really bad-ass.
20:47 In fact, it's probably more vehicle
20:49 than I can drive so far.
20:50 I'm still figuring out like what tire pressures
20:52 it should run, what gear ratio I should be in
20:56 when I'm running different obstacles,
20:57 how much throttle to use at what time.
21:00 Power plant under the hood of this thing has so much power,
21:03 it just lights the tires up instantly.
21:05 So right now it's a learning curve on my part
21:09 to try to catch up to what this little Jeep will do.
21:11 The suspension's flexing awesome.
21:14 The guys at Synergy, BDS, and Fox really came together
21:19 with all their different components
21:20 to really make the thing work awesome.
21:23 The tires, these big Falcons,
21:25 I probably should have those at a lower tire pressure
21:27 when I'm rock crawling.
21:28 It's good to have them at a high pressure
21:30 when you're kind of going fast and bouncing off of stuff,
21:32 but on this kind of rock trail,
21:34 they definitely should have been aired down
21:35 a little bit more.
21:36 Luckily, Warren always comes through for me
21:37 when I screw up.
21:39 We only hit a small portion of the trails here at Harlan,
21:51 but at least we got back to camp before the sun set.
21:53 (upbeat music)
21:59 (rock music)
22:01 (rock music)
22:04 (rock music)
22:07 (rock music)
22:10 (rock music)
22:21 (rock music)
22:32 (rock music)
22:35 (rock music)
22:44 (rock music)
22:56 (rock music)
22:58 (rock music)
23:08 (rock music)
23:19 (rock music)
23:22 (rock music)
23:29 (rock music)
23:41 (rock music)
23:44 (rock music)
23:53 (rock music)
24:05 (rock music)
24:07 (rock music)
24:15 (rock music)
24:26 (rock music)
24:28 (rock music)
24:39 (rock music)
24:50 (rock music)
24:52 (rock music)
24:58 (rock music)
25:01 (rock music)
25:04 (water splashing)
25:06 (water splashing)
