00:00 Yet another cyber attack. This time it's the Facebook page of the NESC
00:06 Technical Institute that has been hacked. The NESC posts to its Facebook page
00:12 every few days but over the past 24 hours five videos have been posted
00:18 containing suggestive not safe for work material. The Education Ministry used its
00:24 social media platform to share statement from the Technical Institute informing
00:29 the public of the attack. It reads quote "we have contacted Meta, Facebook's
00:34 parent company and we are making every effort to resolve the problem and regain
00:40 access and control of our page as quickly as possible" end quote. NESC says
00:45 its student and client information systems have not been affected by the
00:50 breach. The Institute warns members of the public who follow the page to be
00:55 wary of strange posts or messages and report them to Facebook. Additionally
01:01 the Institute has no access to its messenger so if need be you'll have to
01:06 use alternative means to contact them. One cyber expert we contacted says this
01:12 breach does not appear to be very sophisticated. She says to begin with the
01:17 Facebook login requires simply a username and password. This can be
01:22 retrieved from a phishing email designed to once you open that email scan your
01:28 computer for credentials or even something as simple as staff members
01:33 sharing the company's credentials. Our experts suggest given the type of posts
01:38 and the fact that the page has some 21,000 followers compared to say the
01:43 Education Ministry's 107,000 this may be mischievous in nature and designed to
01:50 embarrass the person who maintains the page. To prevent any future recurrence
01:55 the expert advises companies to invest in anti-phishing software and to train
02:00 the administrators in cyber hygiene that is routine practices and steps users
02:07 take to maintain system health and improve online security.
