How to prepare your leaves for collection

Leaf collection programs are kicking back up across the country. AccuWeather's Emmy Victor explains how you can avoid being skipped on collection day.

00:12 On tree-lined streets in Alexandria, Virginia, thousands of leaves get put out for collection.

00:17 "It's a very, I would say, leafy suburb and leaf collection is a very, very popular program every year."

00:23 Most cities run their programs from October to January.

00:27 However, wet leaves can slow crews down.

00:30 "When it rains or snows, that can sometimes slow down our leaf vacuum collection.

00:35 It makes the leaves harder to collect."

00:37 Misunderstandings can also cause slowdowns or prevent your leaves from being picked up.

00:42 Make sure to remove sticks and other yard debris from leaf piles or paper bags.

00:47 It can hurt crews or damage their machines.

00:50 "No trash, no rocks, and I do have rocks on the property, so I have to be careful."

00:54 Also, try not to leave paper bags too close to storm drains.

00:57 They can get wet and break.

00:59 If you don't want to leave leaves at your curb, you can always drop them off at a compost site.
