00:01take a look you're seeing an image of a tornado on the ground in kankakee illinois it's the one
00:07we've been telling you about tony lawback aaron jajak have been tracking this storm and showing
00:12us some of the damage there's a heck of a visual there on that obvious pretty tenacious tornado
00:17and tony lawback was just reporting from the ground where initially close to the point of
00:22touchdown lots of power lines down tens of thousands without power yeah we are looking
00:28it in kankakee county alone we have about seven thousand customers without power so certainly
00:32significant from a storm like this the good news the reports we're seeing so far point towards this
00:39storm moving maybe south of town not through the heart of things so the damage maybe not necessarily
00:44to whole neighborhoods it sounds like a lot of the damage may be from hail as well but tony's in
00:49that
00:49area so we can get the ground truth here he's been there for a little bit of time now tony
00:54the hail you
00:55showed was very impressive what are you learning more about the tornado damage well i was able to
01:01kind of get around here and actually it's funny you mentioned it with the hail here there's still
01:04some very very big hail right here but this is what we're watching here i don't know if you can
01:07see in
01:07the background but this is kind of an industrial area here on the south side of town so this would
01:12be
01:13roughly about where i-57 just to the north of the i-57 junction so i've kind of gotten around
01:19and seeing several industrial buildings kind of warehouse garage type buildings this one's pretty
01:25significantly damaged on the east side of the building looks like a large part of the roof has
01:29been gone and seeing some of the walls stripped away the building itself is still standing but
01:34this would explain the sheet metal that i had seen a little further up the road most of this getting
01:38kind of ripped around here clearly this is about where i would say the tornado developed again kind of
01:44tracking tracking some of the direction the damage is i mentioned earlier the power lines off to my
01:50north were going from east to west across the road down here i'm seeing a lot of the tree damage
01:55a lot
01:56of the power lines going from west to east so obviously some circulation came through here this about
02:02again where we are seeing the the tornado kind of start again we've got emergency crews they've been
02:08pretty busy got a fire truck who's rolling through here now again police have got a lot of this area
02:13closed off right now so uh well we got the uh the fire crews again they're heading east we talked
02:19about some of those neighborhoods uh off to the east southeast of downtown cankeny that's where we're
02:24seeing a lot of the crews on their way to again a lot of those roads are not only closed
02:30but they are
02:31also blocked off as well with down power lines and trees so very difficult to get around here on the
02:36south side uh and again the good news i guess we could say is that in terms of cankeny itself
02:40the tornado looks like it stayed south unfortunately though they had to deal with the hail and as we
02:46mentioned five inch plus hail uh so that is some very very big hail again i measured five inches
02:52and five and a quarter inches on a lot of those hailstones down on the southwest side of town so
02:57a lot going on here again in cankeny itself the main area of town looks like it just took most
03:03of the
03:04hail the tornado it looks like again kind of started in this vicinity on the south side of town again
03:09this is the junction just north of the junction i-57 us-52 and points off to the east where
03:15a lot
03:16of the crews are working right now so again here just mainly uh industrial type buildings power lines
03:22power poles trees uh hopefully the damage not too terribly bad as you get a little bit further to
03:27the east but again i can say with some certainty here that cankeny minus the big hail that went through
03:33uh avoided at least it looks like from this point the tornado that came down with this storm

03:49storm tony's been talking about but aaron tell us what's happened since the last time we talked
03:55yeah so i've gotten closer to this line here it's just off to the west here of wyoming illinois and
04:00then
04:00there are multiple supercells along uh north of the warm front actually so we're on that right here
04:05we've got cold northerly winds uh gushing to the pushing to the south but if you just go a mile
04:12or two to the south those temperatures go up dramatically
