00:00 Tim Burton is sharing his thoughts on artificial intelligence and its threat to animation.
00:05 Burton of course is known for his distinct style of characters seen in his movies like
00:09 Corpse Bride and Frankenweenie.
00:11 During a recent interview with The Independent, the filmmaker was asked about a Buzzfeed story
00:15 published in July that used AI to show what Disney movies would look like if they were
00:19 directed by Burton.
00:20 Some of the AI-generated examples included Elsa from Frozen and Aurora from Sleeping
00:25 Beauty.
00:26 Burton's response, "They had AI do my versions of Disney characters?
00:29 I can't describe the feeling it gives you.
00:32 It reminded me of when other cultures say, 'Don't take my picture,' because it is
00:35 taking away your soul."
00:36 While Burton acknowledged that some of the creations were very good, it didn't take
00:40 away from the less-than-enjoyable feeling he got seeing his creative style imitated.
00:45 He explained, "What it does is it sucks something from you.
00:47 It takes something from your soul or psyche.
00:50 That is very disturbing, especially if it has to do with you.
00:53 It's like a robot taking your humanity, your soul."
00:56 The use of AI in Hollywood is a major concern for actors and writers who have been on strike
01:00 for months after contract negotiations faltered with studios and streamers.
01:04 AI is one of the main points that they haven't been able to agree on.
01:07 Later during the interview, Burton added that his Beetlejuice sequel was nearly finished
01:10 filming before the strikes were called.
01:12 He hopes to finish the film he says is 99% done once the strikes are resolved.
