00:00 Hello everyone, welcome to the month of September, welcome to the first
00:03 installations of putting Dr. G on the spot focusing on infections that
00:09 actually affects both men and women. For the first week we're focusing on
00:14 something a bit nasty which is a type of infection, it is commonest type of
00:19 bacterial infection that affect men and women and it is called Chlamydia.
00:25 [Music]
00:31 Chlamydia is a type of pathogen which is a bit strange because this pathogen is
00:37 mandatory obligate intracellular organism, meaning that the cells or the
00:44 bacteria itself can only survive inside the cells. So therefore it's not so
00:48 easily diagnosed and it's not so easily treated if you don't really know that
00:55 you have got it when you're asymptomatic. It is very common in fact it constitutes
01:01 55% of all the bacterial infection transmitted by sex. Believe it or not
01:07 between 11 to 20% of high-risk behavior men will have this disease and between
01:14 3 to 7% of these men are completely asymptomatic. So the vast majority of men
01:21 will have some degree of dysuria, burning sensation when they urinate and pain and
01:27 sometimes even to the extent that it affect their testicle causing
01:31 epidemitis and these are serious condition that can actually cause pain,
01:36 discomfort and eventually even result in infertility. For women again it is
01:43 affecting between 11 to 20% of sexually active and also high-risk individuals
01:50 and these are the women who have perhaps multiple sexual partners. The
01:54 interesting thing is that quite a large number of women are completely dormant
01:59 to and oblivious of them having this disease. As a result they constantly pass
02:06 the infections from one partner to another and this actually according to
02:11 the American study show that 9.5% of university female students actually have
02:18 got chlamydia that they don't know about. The consequence of chlamydia in
02:24 women is a lot more significant because it can cause pelvic inflammatory disease,
02:29 can result in ectopic pregnancy or even infertility and chronic pelvic pain
02:36 syndrome. Therefore treating them is crucially important. Sometimes screening
02:41 for the disease can be a lot of cumbersome in endeavor is because when
02:48 you screen you need to constantly put the patient through the swab test and
02:54 the swab test can be expensive. Occasionally when the symptom is there
02:59 then the doctors may treat the patients with antibiotics. Interestingly the
03:04 antibiotics can be in a single dose to reduce non-compliant issues and the
03:10 treatment efficacy is nearly 100% with certain type of antibiotics. For the
03:16 following week we're going to talk about another type of infection and we're
03:20 going to talk about a condition called honeymoon cystitis. If you are curious
03:25 then stay tuned for next week's Putting Dr. G on the Spot.
03:32 you
03:34 you
