00:00 Former United National Congress candidate for Glencoe-Goodwood-La Puerta, Marsha Walker
00:06 says she is still a member of the United National Congress.
00:11 Walker has, however, resigned as the UNC's coordinator for the Dago-Martin West constituency
00:17 and was later removed as vice chairman of the party's PR standing committee.
00:23 Walker says her "principled" position surrounds the party's inaction over a member of its
00:30 Dago-Martin party machinery, whose wife has a restraining order against him following
00:36 allegations of physical abuse.
00:39 Walker tells TV6 she raised the matter on several occasions with UNC executives, but
00:44 the straw that broke the camel's back was a circular sent by the UNC's party executive
00:50 just after the August 14th local government election.
00:55 The document sought feedback on aldermen and contained the man's name as a suggestion.
01:02 The UNC did not, however, attain the requisite number of votes to attain an alderman.
01:07 Screenshots from an alleged UNC party chat surfaced on social media showing what is rumoured
01:13 to be the opposition leader's phone saying "Please change Marsha Walker as deputy chair."
01:20 She resigned as DM coordinator.
01:24 Speaking with TV6, Walker contends that one post is not connected to the other.
01:29 She says she intended to still function in her deputy chairman position, it being part
01:35 of the party's constitution.
01:38 Taking to her social media handle, she questions why a meeting was not requested and dialogue
01:44 take place to have the matter resolved.
01:46 The United National Congress responded to her dissent with a statement entitled "Clarification
01:52 of issues surrounding Dagomartin Borough Corporation."
01:56 It reads "The UNC is a democratic organization.
02:01 Members are free to hold their points of view according to their conscience and to resign
02:05 from party positions.
02:07 Members must not undermine the official party positions they hold, however."
02:12 The statement said in such cases the UNC will seek a solution saying "the party has recently
02:18 had to do so."
02:20 Walker took to her social media page in an open letter to opposition leader Kamala Prasad
02:25 Bezaza urging her to step down saying even athletes risk ruining their legacies for not
02:32 leaving the game while they are on top.
02:35 Walker says "I urge you out of nothing but love you are at risk of ruining your legacy."
02:42 Walker says it's time for the young and vibrant fresh faces to take up the mantle of leadership.
02:49 For her electoral district in the 2023 local government election, Walker attained 799 votes,
02:58 second to the PNM's 1,132.
03:03 Still a member of the UNC, Walker when quizzed responds in the affirmative that she would
03:09 offer herself up for candidacy again but only under new leadership.
