Autumn heat wave to build across north-central US

Temperatures will throttle up, making it feel like a second summer for some parts of the U.S., including drought-stricken areas.

00:00 A lot of cool weather so far this week across the Midwest, but that is going to change as

00:04 we are looking at a significant warm up this weekend and what looks to be a very warm dry

00:10 start to next week.

00:11 All right, let's talk about the cool weather that we've seen.

00:14 It's all because of this, this upper level low that we've been tracking here.

00:19 Here it is right near Peoria here.

00:22 This low has been sitting here.

00:24 Now, let me show you what's going on with this, because on the northern side of this

00:29 upper low, what are you getting?

00:30 You're getting the wind flow out of the north.

00:32 That's why it's been cool.

00:33 But I will say this, where you have the sun coming out, it's not going to be all that

00:35 bad today.

00:36 Look at all the dry air from Fargo towards Sioux Falls, denoted by the yellow shading.

00:40 Of course, this is the moisture east of the upper low.

00:43 That's why we're looking at some thunderstorms as we go through today.

00:46 Now, this upper low, where's it going?

00:48 Friday and into the weekend, it's heading in toward the northeast.

00:51 High pressure builds in behind it, and then we're going to start changing our wind flow

00:54 this weekend.

00:55 It's going to start coming in out of the south.

00:57 So all of the warmth that's been building in Texas, southwest states, is going to be

01:01 coming eastward.

01:02 Notice the change in temperatures.

01:04 It is going to be dramatic.

01:05 So we go from 71 degrees in Green Bay as we head toward tomorrow to the middle 80s on

01:10 Saturday.

01:11 80s in Chicago.

01:12 90s this weekend in St. Louis.

01:16 Look at all this warmth going on here from Fargo, Sioux Falls toward Omaha.

01:21 So a little taste of summer.

01:22 Now, next week, I think it gets even warmer here as we get an upper-level high that builds

01:27 across the Plains states, and we're going to start challenging records here in cities

01:30 like Duluth, Fargo, Sioux Falls, Omaha, and Kansas City.
