00:00 The champion is back, Dwayne Bravo himself.
00:02 You have heard the song, and guess what?
00:03 We have more of that for you later on today.
00:05 We'll be playing it throughout the show
00:07 so you can get familiar with the song.
00:09 So when you're jumping in the stands,
00:11 you know what song to look out for.
00:12 It's Dwayne Bravo's "A Champion."
00:14 Well, I want to thank Ovishey this morning,
00:16 and welcome to the TV6 "Bow Them Out" show.
00:19 I am Sergio Dufour, so tell me,
00:21 what did you do on Saturday and Sunday
00:24 when rain ruined the play for TKR's match?
00:27 That was some rain, right?
00:28 Rain won't steal the show today, though.
00:30 This is what we have planned for you.
00:32 We'll be looking back at the St. Lucia Kings contest
00:35 against St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots.
00:37 Well, all of the rain that stole the show.
00:40 We review the playing 11 for TKR,
00:42 and look ahead to what we can expect
00:44 for Wednesday's clash between Jamaica Tallowers
00:47 and the St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots.

00:59 Well, this morning we have an interview
01:01 with Sebastian Edwards.
01:02 He's the president of Maryboys Cricket Club.
01:06 Good morning to you, Mr. Edwards.
01:08 He joins us via Zoom.
01:09 Morning, morning, morning, Sergio.
01:12 Well, tell me, are you surprised
01:13 by all these rained out matches?
01:15 Not really.
01:19 Not really.
01:20 So you expected it?
01:21 I expected a lot of rain this year
01:25 for most of the matches.
01:27 So hopefully during the little pity-carrying period
01:31 that we usually have,
01:33 that we will get some play inside it.
01:36 Right, but is it something now that we should review?
01:39 I mean, T20 cricket is being played yearly now,
01:43 and we expect the rainy season.
01:45 So should there be a shift?
01:47 I think that we might need to look at
01:53 keeping the games in the Northern Caribbean
01:56 more so than the Southern Caribbean.
01:59 I mean, you will get more crowds in the Southern Caribbean
02:02 than probably Jamaica or elsewhere,
02:05 but you will get less rain
02:08 in probably like Jamaica, Antigua, and so on.
02:11 So what's gonna happen with teams like Guyana?
02:14 How are they going to get some games and see some action?
02:17 We would have to fight up and fight with the rain
02:22 and hope that the Almighty blesses us with some sunshine
02:26 so we can get some games in.
02:28 Well, you should try telling that to those Guyana fans.
02:32 I mean, they always look forward
02:33 to seeing Hetmaier play at home.
02:36 Of one of the places that sold out in terms of matches,
02:38 I mean, people lined up to see Guyana play.
02:41 How are you going to have to deal with that?
02:42 What are you gonna say to the fans?
02:45 Traditionally, Trinidad and Guyana
02:48 would normally have the lion's share of support
02:52 in the stands.
02:54 They would normally see full stadia in both islands,
02:57 but it will be tough if we have to move the games
03:02 from these areas to play elsewhere.
03:06 Okay, now tell me, how should teams approach an innings
03:08 when there's bad weather looming?
03:10 We seem to have a lot of that these days.
03:12 Well, for the batting team,
03:16 I would think that they would try to maximize
03:21 the amount of runs they score
03:23 through whatever overs they get.
03:26 So as to put pressure on the team that bats second,
03:31 because scoreboard pressure, as they say,
03:35 runs on the board is runs on the board.
03:37 And then the team bowling second,
03:41 you would be able to instill it,
03:44 to try to get your bowlers to bowl
03:45 a disciplined line to minimize run scoring
03:49 to put them under pressure.
03:51 Right, and I should probably ask,
03:52 if you had the toss, what would you do at the toss
03:55 looking up at the sky and you're seeing clouds?
03:59 It's looking like maybe some swing bowlers
04:01 may come into play.
04:03 What would you do?
04:04 Bat or bowl first?
04:05 For me, and having worked with a number of the,
04:10 as I would say, the better captains,
04:13 Tyron Pollard and Darren Bravo and so on,
04:16 I would think that we would normally look to bat first
04:20 and put as much runs on the board as possible.
04:23 As I said, runs on the board is runs on the board,
04:26 it's already made, right?
04:27 Scoreboard pressure would have a role to play
04:32 going forward in the second innings.
04:34 - And well, how do you manage the nerves of players
04:36 when situations change?
04:37 Well, on short notice,
04:38 we all know about the Duckworth-Lewis method.
04:41 It doesn't always work out for either team.
04:43 - Well, I think that is something
04:46 that the coaches would normally work with.
04:49 Coaches would normally have sections
04:53 where they would put the players under that sort of pressure,
04:57 put them in those situations where we chase
05:00 in a certain amount of runs and ask the players
05:02 to score a certain amount of runs per over
05:06 in the training session so that when it comes to game time,
05:09 while the guys who are the wicket out there,
05:12 the guys who have to go in,
05:15 the coach and so on would be telling them,
05:18 this is what we need to get.
05:21 And based on their training, right,
05:24 they would be more than prepared to deliver what we need.
05:29 - Now, looking at what happened in St. Lucia,
05:33 I mean, what do you think about the outfield
05:35 and the time it took to prepare the outfield?
05:38 I remember some of the commentators saying
05:40 that they weren't satisfied with the turnover rate
05:43 to get the pitch actually ready.
05:45 And the outfield ready, yes,
05:46 especially for the match to begin.
05:48 What can be done to improve that moving forward?
05:52 - Well, first of all, people,
05:57 we need to understand the nature of what a wicket really is.
06:00 A wicket is clear.
06:02 Excuse, sorry.
06:04 A wicket is clear.
06:05 And any water that gets on the clay
06:09 would take some time to dry.
06:10 The outfield is also,
06:13 most of the outfields are sand-based now.
06:17 So it would take some time for it to dry out.
06:20 If the maintenance is not up to par on the outfield,
06:24 it would take some time for the water
06:26 to get down into the underground drains and so on.
06:30 So people need to be,
06:31 we need to be mindful of what it takes
06:35 to get our surface ready.
06:38 I think the Caribbean,
06:39 we need to look at what happens internationally
06:43 and try to get to that point.
06:46 Where if you look at some stadia in England and so on,
06:49 they cover the entire outfield in some cases,
06:53 not just the wicket,
06:55 not just the square and the run-ups,
06:57 they cover the entire field.
06:59 So that when rain is finished,
07:01 it's just to pull up the covers
07:03 and play to start almost immediately.
07:05 - So you think it's somewhat unfair
07:08 to criticize what happened over the weekend
07:11 in St. Lucia in terms of getting the pitch prepared
07:14 at least for 10 overs for either team?
07:17 - Yeah, it might be unfair
07:20 in the short time that we would have.
07:22 Remember, it's water and soil we're talking about.
07:26 It's not a situation where even the super soakers
07:31 that are used to soak up the water,
07:33 they could only do so much.
07:34 So it might be just a little bit unfair.
07:37 I mean, preparation beforehand was key,
07:41 but the timeframe we're looking at
07:44 to get the ground dry is always touch and go
07:49 in this situation.
07:50 So I think the criticism just maybe a little bit unfair.
07:53 - Now, I mean, well, a lot of teams,
07:55 as a result of that,
07:56 they haven't gotten a chance to play.
07:59 And I want to know from you now,
08:00 is there a difference in managing players
08:02 that have played for national teams
08:04 and well, club teams or franchise teams,
08:06 as opposed to those that are at the club level?
08:09 How do you manage all these egos and emotions?
08:11 - It's always a difficult act for a manager or a coach
08:18 to manage players who have played at different levels,
08:24 played with the same team.
08:27 But I think that's where the skill of our coach
08:31 or our manager comes into play,
08:33 where he could have a open discussion with all the players
08:38 and let them know what's expected of them within the setup
08:44 so that he could get the best out of them
08:46 at whatever level they're playing at.
08:49 It just, sorry, it's just a matter of how you manage
08:55 how you reason with your players,
08:59 how you get to speak to your players.
09:02 Because no matter what level they play,
09:05 they still are just, they still are players,
09:08 even with international experience.
09:09 So advice goes both ways,
09:12 from the player to the management staff
09:15 and from management staff to the players.
09:17 - Right.
09:18 Now, in your opinion, what's your idea of a perfect team?
09:21 For instance, would you open with a power hitter
09:23 and a stroke maker, and how would you make,
09:26 how would you use the spin bowlers
09:27 as opposed to pace bowlers in a lineup,
09:30 especially when you haven't gotten a chance
09:32 to really test them in the first match in particular?
09:35 - Well, I'm always a fan of pace bowling.
09:41 I love to see pace bowling.
09:43 Not that I don't like to see spinners,
09:45 but I love to see pacers.
09:48 Any team I have would normally have three outright pacers
09:53 and probably one all-rounder,
09:56 and add a world-class spinner or two to that mix,
09:59 or a good all-rounder as a spinner.
10:03 Right, a batting all-rounder who could bowl spin,
10:06 and probably one outright spinner.
10:12 Recently, I've become a fan
10:14 of left-arm orthodox spin bowling
10:17 because I think that once these guys get it right,
10:21 they are a handful to get away on any given day.
10:26 - Well, Mr. Edwards, stay with us.

14:41 - I think Jamaica, we could have won,

14:47 that I was quite pleased as to what I saw, you know,
14:50 chasing down 180.

15:48 I mean, you had just a few matches rained out

15:52 Are they as an advantage now going into the other matches?
15:55 - Well, weather permitting,
15:59 I think everybody would get games going forward.

16:04 They probably just have a slight edge

16:29 - Have you seen any chinks in the armor

17:09 to actually settle into their final 11?
17:12 - Well, it shouldn't take long.

17:53 - More Trinidadians.
17:56 - Well, I mean, you know a lot about the Trinidadian players.
18:00 How confident are they?

23:16 - Welcome back to the Bold 'Em All Cricket Show.
23:18 So TK Aristaire the Kreeks was brief on Saturday
23:21 against St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots.
23:23 They only got to 19 for one in three overs
23:25 so they didn't give us much to see.
23:27 However, if we are to look at their lineup
23:30 we can see that Mark Dial got a shot
23:32 to open the innings ahead of the power hitters.
23:35 Were you surprised to see him there?
23:37 One of his former mentors, Anil Larkin,
23:39 believes it was his destiny.
23:41 In 2015 Mark Dial made his debut in T20 cricket
23:45 coming out for the red steel in a contest
23:47 where he made a 23 off 25 balls.
23:50 The 30 year old has since played 33 T20 matches
23:54 with a high score of 78.
23:56 His former coach Anil Larkin believes
23:58 his selection to the final 11 of the Trinbago Knight Riders
24:01 is the start of big things to come.
24:04 He's hoping that he gets a chance
24:05 to make full use of his potential as an all-rounder.
24:08 - Obviously to go out there and express himself
24:10 and more importantly show the world what he can do.
24:14 From a batting perspective
24:16 but he also does a bit of bowling as well.
24:19 So one would expect him to perform in an all-round capacity.
24:24 - So what makes the left-handed batsman special?
24:27 - Well, obviously his work ethics
24:29 would have played an integral part
24:30 and being part of that work ethics
24:32 would have made this transition
24:35 for him being a prolific player.
24:37 - Larkin is hoping he becomes consistent.
24:40 - Well, I just honestly believe that
24:42 he just needs to continue to work diligently
24:44 and the results will come.
24:47 - Diyal has played as a middle-order batsman
24:50 but it's left to be seen how he fits into his new role
24:53 as an opener for TKR alongside Martin Guptill
24:56 as they vie for another CPL title.
24:59 - It'll be interesting to see
25:01 if he gets a chance to bowl as well.
25:03 Well, here's something for you.
25:04 There are so many facets to T20 cricket.
25:07 Spin bowling can often be misunderstood art form
25:11 especially in the shorter format.
25:13 However, teams that use these bowlers well
25:16 can acquire a competitive advantage as you know.
25:18 We spoke to veteran spin bowler TNT captain Imran Khan
25:22 on the importance of getting the best
25:23 out of spin bowlers in T20 cricket.
25:26 Now, when you look at T20 cricket in particular
25:29 how effective do you think spin bowling will be
25:32 in T20 cricket?
25:33 - Yeah, I mean, I think, you know, spin bowling
25:35 we can take in bowlers.
25:38 I think it's important that, you know, the Caribbean
25:40 even Western East Asia extend and look for some
25:42 we can take in bowlers.
25:43 And I think this is the format that, you know
25:46 you need spinners to be, you know, taking wickets as well.
25:49 So I think it's important for spinners to, you know
25:51 know their game, you know, be consistent as well
25:53 as a spinner.
25:54 And you know, I think it should be, it should be okay.
25:57 - Can you set a pitch, a T20 pitch for spin bowling?
26:02 - I don't think you can set a pitch
26:03 but I think spinners need to adapt to conditions.
26:05 I think that is important to growing up as a spinner
26:07 international and local.
26:08 And I think you have to adapt to certain situations
26:10 and conditions.
26:11 I think that's important.
26:12 Learning to be a good proper spinner
26:14 you know, to be, you know, at the international standard.
26:18 - When you're playing against aggressive batsmen
26:19 batsmen, you know, power play
26:22 how do you approach it with spin?
26:24 What's the advantage of flighting a ball
26:26 as opposed to skidding a ball on?
26:28 - It's really tough.
26:30 Especially as you say, the power play is really tough.
26:32 I think you have to be smart and, you know
26:33 execution of your plan have to be really good.
26:36 And you bowl wide, force him to cut the ball
26:39 or, you know, you bowl, you know, either, you know
26:41 back off length, force him to punch the ball.
26:43 It's a bit challenging with spinners
26:44 especially in this format.
26:45 Cause you know, batsmen have it really easy
26:47 in this format, especially once the pitches are good.
26:50 It's very, and there's small boundaries as well.
26:51 So it's always hard for spinners to be, you know
26:54 to be contained.
26:55 But I think once you are a wicket-taking bowler
26:57 you know, you always give yourself a chance
26:58 to get wickets.
26:59 - So you think the time will come where
27:01 they implement something for bowlers in T20 cricket
27:04 or will it strongly be?
27:05 - Nah, I don't think so.
27:06 I think it's all for batting.
27:08 You know, it's all for batting, I think.
27:10 - All right, so it's good to be an all-rounder
27:12 in T20 cricket.
27:13 - Of course, and not only in T20
