00:00 My name is James Mwundiku, the National Treasurer for Kenya National Union of Teachers.
00:08 ECD teachers should be employed by teachers service commission.
00:14 And indeed, all teachers ought to have one employer.
00:18 And ECD teachers should not be treated like a babysitter.
00:24 This is a teacher who teaches, who has been trained in the art of teaching.
00:28 And this teacher ought to benefit from being employed by the teacher's employer.
00:34 So we are welcoming that move by the Presidential Party on Education
00:40 so that teachers get back home. Their home is in TSE.
00:46 Teachers have resolved that we should talk to Parliament
00:53 so that the law on pension is repealed.
00:57 So that teachers are paid pension by their employer, the teacher's service commission.
01:04 Because nowadays, after teachers retire, they suffer a lot.
01:09 So we want teachers to be paid by the employer they know from the beginning.
01:15 Teachers do not know those other bodies. They know teachers service commission.
01:21 So we want teachers service commission to be allowed through the law
01:27 to be keeping the teacher's pension and be paying the teacher's pension.
01:31 So we are calling upon our MPs to see to it that that law is repealed.
01:38 Once it is repealed in Parliament, then it will be home and dry.
01:44 There are those teachers who have been employed on intern terms.
01:48 We want to take this opportunity to thank the government
01:51 because of trying to solve the teacher shortage problem.
01:55 We want to thank you and say that we really appreciate you, President.
02:00 What we are telling TSE is teachers who are interns should serve for at least
02:09 a period of time like six months.
02:12 And then they are converted directly into permanent and pensionable
02:17 without even going for further interviews.
