Acting Detective Inspector Andrew Hanson speaks to media in Launceston about the unsolved 1990s murder of Victoria Cafasso.
Transcript
00:00 During the process of that review, it was discovered, and after speaking with witnesses
00:06 and conducting those enquiries, it was discovered that we believe that there is now a more strong
00:12 link with a description of a man that was seen running across the beach at 11am on the
00:17 day that Victoria's body was found, and the driver of a vehicle that was seen in the area
00:22 at around that time.
00:24 So the media release today includes some reconstructed images of a light-coloured Subaru station
00:29 wagon, and that's the vehicle of interest that we're looking to seek some more information
00:33 on today.
00:34 So how that's relevant is, the description of the man seen running across the road at
00:38 11 o'clock was of a man in his 20s.
00:41 He was described as being approximately 6 feet tall, he was slim-billed, but described
00:47 as being very fit and had suntanned arms and legs, and had the general appearance of a
00:52 surfer.
00:53 And the descriptions provided by some witnesses in relation to the driver of the vehicle loosely
00:57 match that.
00:58 So we're now at the point where we believe that vehicle may be linked to the man that
01:02 was seen running across the road, and that's why we've released those recreated images,
01:06 reconstructed images, to try and jog people's memory in relation to that.
01:11 Now I will also say that we understand that nearly 28 years is a long time, so there's
01:15 two aspects that we're mainly looking at in regard to this vehicle.
01:19 The first one is that somebody might know the whereabouts of a similar vehicle in or
01:24 around the East Coast area.
01:26 Now I understand these vehicles were quite popular because of their all-wheel drive capability.
01:29 They used to be able to drive on sandy tracks and bush tracks.
01:33 So we're hoping that maybe after its road use has expired, this vehicle may have been
01:37 sold or passed on, and may have even been used on a farm or is sitting somewhere down
01:40 the East Coast.
01:41 So we're keen to hear of any information about this particular vehicle.
01:45 And the second aspect is to try and ask the local community down there, or anybody that
01:50 was involved around the time in 1995, if they actually have any knowledge about a person
01:55 matching the description that I've previously given that might have been using one of these
01:58 cars.
01:59 Now again, I note that the passage of time is significant in relation to this, and there
02:04 might be some people questioning people's memories as to whether they could actually
02:07 provide us that information after such a period of time.
02:10 But I am comforted by the knowledge that my investigators have provided to me that the
02:15 people involved in this matter are significantly touched by it, and the witnesses they've spoken
02:19 to, the accounts they've given in recent times are very similar to the accounts they gave
02:23 at the time.
02:24 So that comforts me in knowing that the people involved may be able to provide some information
02:29 in relation to this vehicle of interest.
