London’s pie and mash and its EastEnd tradition

We head down to one of London’s most famous Pie and Mash shop in Hoxton to try a traditional EastEnd pie and vegan one too.

00:00 I'm here in East London, home of the pie and mash.

00:03 We're actually in Hoxton, heading to F Cook to try some local delicacies.

00:07 Up there they've got some beef, they've got some vegan pies I'm hearing as well,

00:11 and that famous green liquor sauce.

00:14 I'm a bit nervous but I'm definitely excited to try it.

00:16 It's going to be an experience.

00:17 Let's go and check it out.

00:18 So we're in.

00:21 We've ordered the pies, they've just come.

00:23 We have got a small beef and mince pie and mash here.

00:28 We have also got a vegan pie and mash with some green liquor.

00:33 Cool, first up we've got the beef mince and mash.

00:37 Let's go.

00:37 It's actually really good.

00:40 You're not sure what to expect.

00:42 That gravy in there is absolutely banging to be fair.

00:45 It's pretty good.

00:46 So moving on to the vegan pie.

00:50 It's amazing actually to be honest, coming to a traditional place like this,

00:53 having vegan option.

00:54 I wasn't expecting it but it's here.

00:56 I've gone for the liqueur as well.

00:58 I'm going to be honest, the liqueur is not the most appetising to look at.

01:03 But we're here, we've got to give it a go.

01:06 Let's see.

01:06 Not a fan of the vegan pie guys.

01:23 But just because my taste buds aren't up to scratch,

01:26 doesn't mean this traditional meal isn't still a fan favourite.

01:30 During the taste test, the pie shop was constantly busy

01:33 with regulars and tourists tucking in gleefully to this East London special.

01:37 Pie and mash has been an East End working class staple for hundreds of years,

01:42 with the first shop supposedly opening in the 1800s

01:46 and F Cooks still embodies the old school classic perfectly.

01:50 So we did it, first time ever trying pie and mash

01:54 and it was an experience.

01:55 I really liked the beef mince pie and mash, that was great.

01:58 I'll be honest, the green liqueur, not for me.

02:01 It's kind of like a green custard.

02:02 It's not really nice to look at and it's not really nice to taste either.

02:06 But the main beef pie and mash, big fan.

02:08 Will I be coming back for more?

02:10 I'm not sure.

02:12 Did I enjoy the experience?

02:13 Definitely.
