Former childcare worker faces 1623 child abuse offences

A Gold Coast man is facing more than 16-hundred child abuse charges. All of the parents and carers of the Australian children allegedly recorded in the child abuse material have been informed and authorities have been asked to explain how the 45-year-old was able to work in the childcare sector.

00:00 So the man had all the qualifications that he needed to work in the centres across Queensland,

00:06 New South Wales and we won't be making any further comment because the matter is subject

00:12 - the matter is before the court.

00:14 I guess the question so many people are asking is how was this man able to commit these alleged

00:21 crimes over such a long period without being red flagged to any law enforcement?

00:26 So the AFP did not receive any reports from parents or any other person prior to the man

00:33 being arrested and charged.

00:35 These are horrific crimes and are subject to matters before the court.

00:40 There's very limited that I can say as these charges will be going before the court but

00:46 the AFP never gave up and our partners never gave up in terms of identifying all of the

00:51 children and we're highly confident that all of the children who are subject to the material

00:58 recorded - the recorded child abuse material - have been identified and contact made with

01:04 parents and carers.

01:05 It's beyond the realms of anyone's imagination what this person did to these children.

01:12 I can only say that you try not to be shocked after a long period of time in the police

01:18 crime reporting but this is a horrific, horrific case and I'd like to thank the AFP and the

01:23 Queensland Police for bringing this information to the New South Wales Police so we can bring

01:28 it before the courts and our victims can get justice.

01:30 And this only came to police's attention because of those videos on the dark web that just

01:37 happened I suppose to be linked to what unravelled into this huge case?

01:42 Yeah, the AFP undertook a very, very thorough investigation with the Queensland Police Force

01:47 when that first uncovered and as a result of that great work our victims were identified

01:53 through a hard drive that was found during one of the search warrants.
