Jo Town, 51, has listed nearly everything she owns on the buy and sell website so she can pay the bills for two operations for her nine-month-old Basset Hound Smartie Pants. She first noticed a problem in the puppy's eye when she was three months old and her eyelid had rolled over. She had an operation to straighten it out but then an ulcer appeared in the other eye and she contracted cherry eye - a condition that causes the gland underneath the eyelid to pop out. Vets then told Jo that Smartie's eyes were too small for her sockets and she needed two operations to rectify the problem, which she has now had. She had double eye lifts on both eyelids and surgery to push the gland back into the eyelid. If the eyes had been left it would have resulted in Smartie going blind and further infections. Jo is now paying the surgery Animal Health Trust in Newmarket, Suffolk, in installments.
