Chaos and violence have seized the streets of the capital city of Bujumbura after an army chief announced he had ousted President Pierre Nkurunziza in what appears to be a coup attempt. Thousands of protesters clashed with riot police who launched teargas and reportedly fired warning shots at the crowd. General Godefroid Niyombare says he deposed President Nkuunziza for seeking an unconstitutional third term in office and that he is working with civil society groups to form a transitional government. The President’s media advisor immediately dismissed the coup as a joke. President Nkurunziza has been in Tanzania to seek support of the East African community for his third term bid. He is reportedly on his way back to Burundi to address the situation. teleSUR
