00:00We move now to Massachusetts in the United States or on Sunday as people were celebrating Mother's Day.
00:06A vigil was held for an educator threatened with deportation by ICE.
00:10It's Mother's Day here in Lynn, Massachusetts, and while millions are at home celebrating,
00:14the community here is holding a candlelight vigil for a local mom and educator named Mariola,
00:19who ICE is threatening to deport and separate from her son and her students.
00:24We are the world. We are the children.
00:30We care for her and we are here to support her for everything that she's going through.
00:36Back in March, we reported here in Lynn on the community, one of Greater Boston area's largest working-class
00:42and immigrant enclaves, who came together in part to protest ICE, but also to prepare community response networks
00:48specifically for moments like these.
00:50Today, we're seeing what Donald Trump dubbed the biggest deportation operation in United States history continuing.
00:56They say going after the worst of the worst.
00:59Mariola is not a headline. She's not a political talking point. She's a mother, an educator, and a caregiver.
01:06DHS claims and independent tracking show that they've deported somewhere between 5,500 and 700,000 people
01:12since the start of this administration all the way back in 2025.
01:16And although total deportation numbers during the Biden administration prior were pretty similar,
01:20arrests from within U.S. communities are up five-fold.
01:23The number of people who have been jailed by ICE has doubled, and more than two-thirds of those jailed
01:28have no criminal conviction at all.
01:31Mariola has the rare advantage of having a union and public support behind her.
01:36We love you.
01:37Te amamos.
01:39We see you.
01:40Te vemos.
01:41You are not alone.
01:43No estas sola.
01:44Today, I feel very happy that I have so many people who are supporting me.
01:51I think everyone should deserve that.
01:54Across Massachusetts, 7,000 people, half without criminal convictions or even charges,
01:59people rooted in their communities, people with loved ones here at home, have been taken away.
02:03Contrary to Trump's promises to the U.S.-born working class, overall employment and labor demand
02:08are down across the country.
02:10Local and state tax receipts are down by the millions, and the cost of food, new housing construction,
02:15and childcare are all up.
02:17Massachusetts lawmakers are considering a bill called the Protect Act that would restrict
02:21state and local collaboration with ICE, though its critics say that it's been watered down
02:25and that there are massive loopholes that would remain if it was passed.
02:29If you have not already signed the petition, with about 5,000 others, please add your name.
02:36We'll be following Mariola's appeal, along with continuing reporting on the impact of U.S. immigration policy.
02:41From Lynn, Massachusetts, I'm Mitch Gaines, Telesor English.
